In our earlier posts we had detailed sub 4 meter SUV sales that included the likes of Nexon, Brezza and Venue that grew by 15.64 percent YoY but dipped 3.56 percent MoM. We also reported on compact SUV sales, which had the Creta, Grand Vitara and Seltos on the list, with YoY sales growth of 44.66 percent and MoM decline of 17.31 percent. Mid-size SUV’s that had the XUV700, Safari and Hector also posted YoY growth and MoM decline in sales. Sedan sales, on the other hand, was the reverse in Feb 2023. Sales dipped on a YoY basis by 3.57 percent but gained in terms of MoM sales by 11.50 percent.

Top 10 Sedans Feb 2023 – Dzire Maintains Lead With Near 50% Market Share

Sedan sales in Feb 2023 stood at 35,387 units in Feb 2023. This was a 3.57 percent YoY decline in sales from 36,698 units sold in Feb 2022. Every model on this list posted YoY dip in demand except for the Honda Amaze and Hyundai Aura. MoM sales improved for the Aura, Virtus and Camry. On a MoM basis, sedan sales growth was seen at 11.50 percent over 31,737 units sold in Jan 2023. This was a volume growth of 3,650 units.

Maruti Suzuki DZire topped the sales list with sales of 16,798 units, down 3.67 percent from 17,438 units sold in Feb 2022. This was volume de-growth of 640 units while the DZire commanded a 47.47 percent share on this list. MoM sales however increased substantially by 48.43 percent from 11,317 units sold in Jan 2023 relating to a 5,481 unit volume growth.

Hyundai Aura saw its YoY sales improve by 50.60 percent to 5,524 units in Feb 2023 from 3,668 units sold in Feb 2022. MoM sales also increased by 19.21 percent over 4,634 units sold in Jan 2023. Market share went up from 14.60 percent held in Jan 2023 to 15.61 percent in the past month.

At No. 3 was the Honda Amaze with a YoY sales growth of 21.09 percent to 4,123 units, up from 3,405 units sold in Feb 2022. MoM sales fell by 26.11 percent over 5,580 unit sales in Jan 2023. Tata Tigor posted a YoY and MoM decline in sales to 3,064 units, down 25.10 percent when compared to 4,091 units sold in Feb 2022. MoM sales also fell 1.35 percent over 3,106 units sold in Jan 2023. Market share is down to 8.66 percent from 9.79 percent held in Jan 2023.

Honda City and Skoda Slavia have posted YoY and MoM de-growth. City sales dipped 30.78 percent YoY and 4.62 percent MoM to 1,963 units in Feb 2023 to command a market share of 5.55 percent. Slavia sales also fell 31.58 percent YoY and 9.84 percent MoM to 1,274 units in Feb 2023. There had been 1,862 units and 1,413 units sold in Feb 2022 and Jan 2023 respectively. VW Virtus, launched in India in June 2022 has reported sales of 1,563 units in Feb 2023. This was a MoM growth of 13.34 percent when compared to 1,379 units sold in Jan 2023. Market share also improved from 4.35 percent to 4.42 percent MoM. Maruti Ciaz sales dipped 58.58 percent YoY to 792 units and by 20.80 percent MoM from 1,000 units sold in Jan 2023.

Verna finished in the red, down 95.56 percent YoY to just 47 units even as the company had sold 1,058 units of this sedan in Feb 2022. MoM sales fell by 95.28 percent from 995 units sold in Jan 2023. These lack luster sales could be in view of buyers putting off sales and awaiting launch of the new 2023 Hyundai Verna that is scheduled to be launched on 21st March 2023. It promises to come in with an extensive list of features and driver and passenger luxuries, some of which are best in segment, along with a most powerful engine.

Premium Sedan Sales Feb 2023

Sales of Skoda Superb also dipped to 90 units in Feb 2023 from 99 units sold in Feb 2022, a 9.09 percent YoY de-growth and a 6.25 percent MoM dip in sales from 96 units sold in Jan 2023. There were also 82 units of Skoda Octavia sold last month, relating to a 51.19 percent YoY and 18 percent MoM de-growth. Toyota Camry may have reported a YoY de-growth of 58.39 percent but has seen better performance on a MoM basis which improved by 13.56 percent to 67 units in Feb 2023 from 59 units sold in Jan 2023.
