Top 15 hatchbacks and sedans that got the maximum GST price cut

Buying a hatchback or a sedan just got cheaper as automakers across India have affixed a lower price tag to these models.

GST – Goods and Services Tax, introduced in India from 1st July 2017 has had a serious impact on the price of small hatchbacks and sedans. These sub 4 meter petrol cars now attract a tax of 29% (28% GST and 1% Cess) as against an earlier 31.5% tax.

Sub 4 meter diesel cars are now taxed at the rate of 31% (28% GST and 3% tax) as compared to an earlier 33.25%, while sedans larger than 4 meters but not including SUVs are taxed at 43% (28% GST and 3% tax) as against an early 51.6%. Below is a list of top 15 cars which have received the most price cut in the sedan or hatchback category –

15. VW Polo GT – Price cut INR 46,000

Volkswagen Polo GT TSI comes with a more powerful engine and a host of cosmetic accents that set it apart from the regular Polo. Distinctive GT TSI badges are prominently displayed at the rear while there is also a GT badge on its front grille.

Features include a leather wrapped steering wheel, gearknob and handbrake while automatic climate control, ambient lighting, rear parking sensors, a cooled glove box and electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs are also a part of its features.

The hatchback is powered by a 1.2 liter TSI engine offering 103 bhp power and 175 Nm torque and a 1.5 liter diesel engine offering 108 bhp power and 250 Nm torque. The engines are mated to 7 Speed DSG and 5 MT respectively. Volkswagen Polo GT TSI competes with Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS and Fiat Abarth Punto. Post GST Price starts from INR 9.17 lakh.

14. Maruti DZire – Price cut INR 53,000

This third generation Maruti Suzuki DZire, in the sub 4 meter category is positioned on the same Heartect platform on which the current generation Baleno is positioned. Boot space and cabin are more spacious while ride height is also increased by 7mm to 163mm.

The DZire sits on 15” alloy wheels and gets projector headlamps, DRLs, reverse parking sensors and reverse parking camera. Its safety features include dual airbags, ABS, EBD, ISOFIX along with pre-tensioners and force limiters in the front seat belts.

Maruti DZire gets its power from a 1.2 liter petrol engine offering 83 PS power and 113 Nm torque and a 1.3 liter diesel capable of 75 PS power and 190 Nm torque. Both engines get mated to a 5 speed manual or 5 speed automatic manual transmission. It competes with the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Volkswagen Ameo, Ford Figo Aspire, Tata Tigor and Tata Zest. Post GST Price starts from INR 5.5 lakh.
