Best selling cars in India for July 2019 – Maruti WagonR No 1, Honda City No 25

Auto brands across the spectrum have acknowledged that the industry is facing one of its most difficult phases. While Q1 FY19-20 was difficult to begin, July sales have shown no sign of recovery, and been even poorer in terms of performance for almost all auto manufacturers. Looking at the current reality, one can only be hopeful that the festivities bring in a positive tide.

Maruti WagonR sits atop the list of 25 most sold cars in July 2019. At about 15k unit sales, sales growth is reported at 5.04 percent, up from 14,339 units sold in July 2018. The next 5 cars too are from MSIL. Maruti Dzire lost about 50 percent is sales. Volumes are down to 12,923 units from 25,647 units.

Swift follows closely at 12,677 units, down from 19,993 units. Down 36.59 percent from July 2018 volume. Maruti Alto too lost 50 percent volume and is down at 11,577 units sold, down from 23,371 units sold in July 2018. Eeco, is 6th on the list, and akin to WagonR has in fact posted sales growth. At 29.51 percent growth, 9,814 units were sold, up from 7,578 units sold in July 2018. Ertiga too is in the top 10 list at 8th place having grown 93.58 percent. Sales were up to 9,222 units, up from 4,764 units sold in July 2018.

The other 3 cars that complete the 10 10 list are as expected from Hyundai. Hyundai Venue compact SUV, the brand’s newest launch sits snug at 7th spot at 9,585 units sold. Hyundai i20 sales decline is at 16.73 percent. July 2019 sales are down to 9,012 units from 10,822 units sold a year earlier. Hyundai Creta sales decline is at 36.82 percent, down to 6,585 units, down from 10,423 units. Some of this decline can be attributed to the brand’s new launch Venue owing to the interest the compact SUV segment garners.

Honda Amaze, which has sold well for the brand through last year is now dealing with contracted sales. July 2019 sales decline stood at 42.85 percent at 5,818 units sold, down from 10,180 units sold a year earlier. Hyundai Santro, which made a comeback late in 2018 finds itself on 12th spot at 5,309 units sold.

Maruti Brezza stood at 13th with the highest sales decline percentage at 62.61 percent. Brezza has for long led the compact SUV segment but lost the lead to Venue last month. Sales stood at 5,302 units, down from 14,181 units sold in July 2018.

2nd-gen Hyundai Grand i10, is being readied for launch. In the meantime, the current model on sale saw 5,081takers, down 52.84 percent from 10,775 units sold in July 2018. Toyota Innova sits on 15th spot at 26.71 percent sales decline. Sales was down to 4,865 units, down from 6,638 units sold a year earlier.

Start to Q2 FY2019-20 hasn’t been great for Maruti Celerio. With sales decline at 34.86 percent, sales are down to 4,805 units, down from 7,376 units sold in July 2018. Tata Tiago sales is down 41.45 percent. Sales was below 5k at 4,689 units, down from 8,009 units sold in July 2018.

Another newly launched compact SUV is in the list of top 25 sellers. Mahindra XUV300 sales is reported at 4,464 units. Mahindra takes 19th spot too. Bolero sales decline at 32.22 percent saw sales down to 4,446 units, down from 6,559 units sold in July 2018. Tata Nexon sales decline is the smallest on the list at 12.92 percent. Sales is down to 3,344 units, down from 3,840 units sold last July. Ford Ecosport is the solo offering from the brand on the list at 21st spot. Sales is down 22.35 percent at 3,137 units sold, down from 4,040 units sold in July 2018.

Mahindra has another SUV on the list. Scorpio sales decline is reported at 26.11 percent down to 2,864 units from 3,876 units sold a year prior. Kwid si the only Renault offering on the list at 23rd spot. At 46.48 sales decline, the company sold 2,684 units of Kwid, down from 5,015 units sold last July.

Last two spots on the list are taken by Ciaz and City. Maruti Ciaz sales growth is outstanding in number but not so much in volume. The company sold 2,397 units last month, up from 48 units sold in July 2018. The low base number is because Ciaz facelift was launched in August 2018. Honda City completes the list on final spot. Sales is down 48.21 percent, down to 1,921 units from 3,709 units old in July 2018.

Total volume of top 25 sellers has contracted by 23.31 percent. Collective sales fell to 1,68,065 units, down from 2,19,143 units sold in July 2018.
