Passenger vehicles saw strong domestic demand in May 2016 with 6 automakers posting double-digit growth while overall the segment grew by 7% to 2,30,466 units. Even as new launches signaled increased demand, the sudden shift in increase in demand for petrol engined vehicles has put some pressure on automakers disrupting the supply-demand chain.
Maruti Suzuki India Limited ruled the charts of top 25 best selling passenger vehicles during the past month. Increase in sales is attributed to launch of new cars like Vitara Brezza and Baleno.
Maruti Vitara Brezza sales for the month stood at 7,193 units while other passenger cars such as Alto, DZire, WagonR and Swift once again claimed top 4 positions despite falling sales. Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Celerio, OMNI, Eeco, Ciaz and Ertiga also found mention on the list of top 25 best selling models. MSIL overall sales which included domestic and exports increased 7.1% to touch 1,23,034 units as against 1,14,825 units sold in May 2015.
Hyundai India registered domestic sales of 41,351 units in may 2016, a 10.4% growth as against sales in May 2015 which stood at 37,450 units. Among company’s best sellers were the i10 Grand which recorded a 19% growth with 12,055 units sold in May 2016 as compared to 10,112 units sold in May 2015. Hyundai i20 saw only a 1% increase in growth with 10,472 units sold while the Hyundai Creta, Xcent and Eon also scored on the list of top 25 best selling passenger vehicles during the past month.
Renault India’s Kwid saw sales of 5,600 units during the past month while Toyota only found its Innova and Etios on the list of best sellers in May 2016. 7,259 units of Innova were sold in May 2016 as compared to 5,028 units sold in May 2015, making it the best-selling Utility vehicle in the country for the month. Sales of Etios jumped 2% to 2,625 units in May 2016 from 2,550 units sold in May 2015.
Mahindra and Mahindra best sellers in May 2016 included the KUV100, Bolero and Scorpio. While Bolero sales dipped 42% and Scorpio sales remained the same, KUV100 sales stood at 4,446 units. Tata Motors hatchback sales grew by 7%, due to strong demand for Tiago launched on 6th April, of which 3,287 units were sold in May 2016.
