If we look at data of top 50 two-wheelers sold in November 2019, we can see that only two out of top 10 and only fifteen out of top 50 have registered positive YoY growth. The top 50 two-wheelers registered total sales of 14,01,914 units in November 2019, which is de-growth of 13% in comparison to 16,11,329 units sold in same period last year.
Commuter bikes and scooters in 100 – 125 cc range continue to dominate, grabbing all top 10 slots in the list. Leading the pack is Hero Splendor, with sales of 2,23,289 units in November 2019. However, even the two-wheeler market leader has registered negative growth of -1%. Splendor sales in November last year stood at 2,25,536 units. It may be recalled that Splendor has received BS-VI upgrade and BS-IV versions are no longer in production.
At second spot is Honda Activa, with sales of 2,12,164 units in November. However, YoY sales are down -2.77%. Activa sales in November last year stood at 2,18,212 units. Activa is India’s top-selling scooter and also the first scooter to get BS-VI upgrade. At third place is Hero HF Deluxe, another favourite of the common man. A total of 1,59,544 units were sold in November 2019, which translates into YoY loss of -5.51%. Sales during the same period last year stood at 1,68,839 units.
At number four is Honda CB Shine, the first bike in the list with positive YoY growth of 6.13%. Sales have increased by 4,341 units, up from 70,803 units in November last year to 75,144 units in November 2019. At number five, Bajaj Pulsar is another consistent performer with sales of 68,268 units in November 2019. However, YoY sales are down -1.88%.
Other two-wheelers in top 10 list include TVS XL Super (57,550 units; -22.84%), Bajaj Platina (53,015; -15.25%), Suzuki Access (49,128; 16.05% positive growth), Bajaj CT 100 (44,808; -21.20%), and Hero Glamour (43,370; -31.61%). Two-wheelers with positive YoY growth in November include Honda Dio, TVS Ntorq, Hero Pleasure, Yamaha FZ, RE Bullet 350, Honda LIVO, Honda GRAZIA, Suzuki Burgman, RE Bullet Electra, Suzuki GIXXER, Bajaj Avenger, KTM 125 and Aprilia SR125.
KTM 125 is the top gainer in terms of percentage growth, registering a massive 367.18% YoY growth in November 2019. Aprilia SR125 has also done well with YoY growth of 361.06%. Maximum loss in percentage terms is that of TVS Victor, which has registered -81.24% de-growth, down from 7,301 to 1,370 units. Hero Duet has also registered major loss of -77.49%, down from 12,137 to 2,732 units.
A brief lull after the festive rush was expected and the above numbers support that theory. Two-wheeler sales are expected to improve in the coming months, as more BS-VI compliant versions are launched. Economic conditions in the country will also impact two-wheeler sales in the coming months.
