Toyota has only a few volume products in India, which are separated by a fair gap. From Etios hatchback priced at Rs. 5.00 lakhs at the lower end of the pyramid, the portfolio goes all the way up to Land Cruiser 200 priced at Rs. 1.18 crores (ex-showroom Delhi). But there are only 10 products altogether, of which only Etios range (hatchback, Cross and sedan), Innova and Fortuner churn out volume sales. To plug the gap between models, especially between B- and D-segments, and grow better in Indian market, new Toyota compact sedan and sub-4 metre SUV are in the works. This is the first time the Japanese carmaker is working on such product types, which is similar to the case when Toyota came up with Etios Liva and sedan. Etios Liva is Toyota’s first hatchback, unveiled at 2010 Delhi Auto Expo.
Both new products, Toyota compact SUV and sub-4 sedan, will be positioned between Etios range and Corolla Altis, where very high sales are seen. Both new models are expected to share platform and powertrain. They will be launched in India first, in the next two to three years.
