Toyota has teased its all-new electric SUV for the Indian market, signalling a major step forward in the brand’s EV roadmap for the country. While Toyota has not officially revealed the name yet, the teaser strongly points to the Urban Cruiser EV, which is based on the Urban BEV Concept showcased earlier and will be the electric sibling of Maruti Suzuki eVitara.

Toyota’s First Mass-Market Electric SUV

The teaser shows a covered SUV with illuminated LED headlamps and full-width LED DRLs at the front and rear, hinting at a modern, high-tech design language. The lighting signatures seen through the veil closely resemble those of the Urban BEV Concept, which was first showcased in India at the Bharat Expo. The overall silhouette suggests a compact-to-mid-size SUV with a strong road presence, positioned as a premium electric offering from Toyota.

The upcoming Toyota electric SUV is expected to be called Toyota Urban Cruiser EV and will be manufactured in India at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat plant. Like its Maruti counterpart, Maruti Suzuki eVitara, the Urban Cruiser EV is a global product, with exports already started. This aligns with Toyota’s strategy of leveraging local manufacturing while serving multiple international markets.

In terms of design, the production-spec Urban Cruiser EV is expected to stay close to the Urban BEV Concept. It features a muscular front fascia with high-set headlights, a strong bonnet line, chunky wheel arches, and pronounced body cladding. Aerodynamic elements such as air channels in the front bumper are aimed at improving efficiency, while details like C-pillar-mounted rear door handles and a neatly integrated roof spoiler add to its visual appeal. At the rear, slim LED tail-lamps and a largely unpainted bumper give the SUV a rugged yet clean look.

Inside, the Urban Cruiser EV is expected to mirror the cabin layout of the eVitara, featuring a floating centre console, a two-spoke steering wheel, and dual digital screens for infotainment and instrumentation. Toyota is also likely to offer a comprehensive ADAS suite along with multiple active and passive safety features, positioning the SUV competitively in the fast-growing EV segment.

Powertrain options for Toyota’s new electric SUV are expected to be identical to those of the eVitara. Buyers will likely get a choice between 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery packs. With the teaser now out, Toyota appears to be gearing up for a formal reveal in the coming months. The Urban Cruiser EV is expected to launch in India later in 2025, marking Toyota’s entry into the mass-market electric SUV space and strengthening its partnership-driven EV strategy alongside Maruti Suzuki.
