Launched in June, Toyota Glanza has emerged as a preferred choice for many in the premium hatchback segment. When the car was launched, not many found a liking, as it was nothing but a rebadged Maruti Baleno. But seeing at the sales numbers, the hatchback is slowly climbing the charts.
In August, Glanza was the third bestselling car in the segment, registering sales of 2,322 units. A rebadged version of Maruti Baleno, Glanza was launched as part of a collaborative strategy deployed by Toyota and Suzuki.
A new variant of Glanza will be launched next month during the festive season. The new variant will be positioned below the G MT Smart Hybrid variant that is currently the cheapest Glanza, available at Rs 7.22 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). This new variant of Glanza will be the most affordable Glanza on sale. However, it will be missing the dual battery setup, as can be seen with G MT Smart Hybrid variant.
One key reason for introducing a new, cheaper variant of Glanza is that price of existing G MT Smart Hybrid variant will be increased soon. This variant was launched as part of an introductory offer and now prices are expected to undergo an upward revision. The same configuration on Baleno costs Rs 7.86 lakh, which is around 70k more than Glanza G MT Smart Hybrid variant.
New Glanza variant will ensure that sales are not affected when price is increased for existing base variant. As of now, Glanza is offered in four variants, G MT, V MT, G CVT and V CVT. There are two 1.2-litre engines, one of which is the 1.2-litre Dual Jet Dual VVT engine that comes with a mild-hybrid setup. Mild hybrid option is available only with G MT variant. These engines power various other Maruti cars including Baleno. Both engines are BS-VI compliant.
Glanza mild hybrid engine makes 90 hp power while the standard 1.2-litre motor makes 83 hp. The 48-volt advanced lithium-ion battery supplies 7 hp of additional power whenever needed. Glanza mild hybrid variant is also the most fuel efficient, offering mileage of 23.87 km/l.
While Glanza shares most of its components with Baleno, the differentiation comes from additional offers such as 5-years/2,20,000 km extended warranty, low maintenance cost, free 3 years roadside assistance, and the promise of Toyota’s world-class customer service.
