Toyota Glanza in good demand – But sales much lower than Maruti Baleno

Toyota Motors launched the new Glanza premium hatchback in the country last month. This rebadged Maruti Suzuki Baleno comes in at a competitive price from Rs.7.21-9.0 lakhs. It undercuts the Maruti Suzuki Baleno Zeta by Rs.65,000 while its top spec Glanza V CVT is on par with the Baleno Alpha CVT.

In spite of being priced lower than the Maruti Baleno, Glanza sales are no where near that of Baleno. Maruti is selling about 15,000 units of Baleno on average a month, while Toyota has managed to sell about 2,000 units of Glanza a month since launch.

Its not that Toyota is competing with Maruti in sales. In fact, Toyota is quite happy with Glanza’s performance in India. They had a target of selling 2,000 units of Glanza a month already. In some cities, the demand is much more, which has resulted in waiting period of about 2 months for Glanza.

Toyota Glanza, offered in two variants, the G and V, based on the top two trims of Baleno – Zeta and Alpha. These are further sub divided into G MT, V MT, G CVT and V CVT. The Glanza appears to have instantly appealed to buyers in the country. Highest demand is for the Glanza G MT variant while the Glanza V CVT demand is higher than V MT variant. The main reason for this longer waiting period is that Suzuki supplied lesser top variants.

Toyota Glanza premium hatchback competes with the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20 and Honda Jazz. Among these, the segment leader Baleno commands a maximum waiting period of 8 weeks. The Hyundai i20 has the lowest waiting period upto just 15 days in cities such as Chennai and Mumbai and is readily available in cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune and Chandigarh. VW Polo deliveries also hover around 15 days to 1 month depending on location and dealerships.

Toyota Glanza G variant gets powered via a 1.2 liter K12N engine with a mild hybrid motor. This engine offers 89 bhp power and 113 Nm torque. The Glanza V variant gets a 1.2 liter K12M engine without mild hybrid system. This engine is capable of 82 bhp power and 113 Nm torque. The engines get mated to a 5 speed manual transmission with option of 7 step CVT. Mileage figures stand at 21.01 kmpl for the V MT variant going up to 23.87 kmpl on the G MT but down to 19.56 kmpl for the CVT. There are no diesel engine options offered on the Toyota Glanza.
