Having been present in the Indian auto industry since 1999, Toyota has not grown as much the company would have expected. Their market share is only 5%, this in spite of having a strong brand presence in the country.
For long time the company has been focusing on increasing their market share to a double digit figure, but some how this has not been possible. They launched the Etios range in 2010, mainly to increase sales. But the product did not perform as per expectations. And today, most of the Etios you see on the road are owned by taxi fleet companies.
Now, in the next phase of car launches, Toyota India is looking at introducing two new cars, both in the under Rs 10 lakhs segment. One will be a sedan, which will rival the likes of Honda City, Maruti Ciaz, etc; while the second will be a compact SUV, which will rival Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano and Hyundai ix25.
The first car, a sedan is most likely going to be the new Toyota Vios. This sedan is already on sale in majority of the South East Asian nations, including Japan, China, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand. The second car will be an iteration based on Toyota Rush SUV. Manufactured by Toyota’s subsidiary, Daihatsu, this car comes in 2WD and 4WD options.
Both these cars will be offered in a choice of petrol and diesel engine options. Already spied testing in India, both these cars are most likely to debut at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo, before being launched in the market later that year.
