The Toyota Innova Crysta got off to a strong start by registering over 15,000 bookings in just 10 days. However, the MPV is banned in Delhi by Supreme Court since both its diesel engines displace more than 2.0-litre.
Talking to Financial Express, N Raja, Director and Senior VP, Sales and Marketing, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, stated that the company is losing a sales volume of around 800 units per month due to the Delhi diesel ban. So it has decided to come up with the Toyota Innova Crysta petrol variant of its popular premium family MPV to cater to the market.
He added that the company’s Japanese R&D centre is developing the new 2.7-litre petrol engine for the Indian market. Mr. Raja says that the India-spec petrol motor will be an all-new unit. A 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol motor is available in Middle East-spec Innova. Mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, this motor puts out 164 PS at 5,200 rpm and 245 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm.
The Innova Crysta is currently available with 150 PS 2.4- and 174 PS 2.8-litre diesel engines. The former is mated to a 5-speed MT while the latter is available only with a 6-speed AT.
