If there is one car nameplate in India which has defined the country’s premium MPV segment, it has to be Toyota Innova. Evolved from Qualis, Toyota Innova has been India’s de facto premium MPV and premium taxi for the better part of two decades. There have been three generations of Innova on sale in India.

For Toyota, it all started with 1st Gen Innova, Innova Crysta is like a middle child and Innova Hycross is the latest and greatest with Hybrid powertrains. While Innova Crysta was supposed to be phased out around 2025, the production will continue till around March 2027 and that’s when it will be discontinued. Let’s take a closer look at this development.

Toyota Innova Crysta Discontinued In 2027

Innova has always been India’s favourite premium MPV and the country’s most sought-after premium taxi ever since it debuted in 2016. It has had a few updates by the company to keep the product fresh and has undergone quite a few changes under its bonnet to meet evolving emission standards set forth by Indian Government.

Upcoming CAFE 3 norms are the reason why Toyota will pull the plug on Innova Crysta in India as they are more stringent than ever before. CAFE abbreviates to Corporate Average Fuel Economy and upcoming CAFE 3 norms puts Toyota at a disadvantage where carbon di-oxide emissions from a heavy ladder-frame Diesel MPV are concerned.

The newer Innova Hycross comes as standard with Petrol engines and buyers are given an option to choose a Self-Charging Hybrid system with limited pure electric propulsion. Both these options will bring better super credits to Toyota under the upcoming calculations under the upcoming CAFE 3 norms.

Sales will continue till 2027

Innova Crysta was supposed to be discontinued in 2025, but this ladder-frame Diesel MPV has maintained its relevance in the country even though its successor is already launched. Crysta is powered by a 2.4L Turbo Diesel engine and is currently mated to a sole 5-speed manual gearbox and enjoys quite a niche.

As per recent reports, Toyota Innova Crysta will continue to be on sale till around March 2027 and then it will be discontinued. We don’t expect another Diesel MPV from Toyota as the push is for Petrol and Petrol Hybrid vehicles. Innova Hycross fares better in this regard and it is expected to take Innova brand’s legacy to new heights.

Official Statement by Toyota Kirloskar Motor, Spokesperson: “We would like to refrain from making any comments on future products. However, Toyota’s product strategy continues to be guided by its multi-pathway approach offering practical, inclusive, and sustainable mobility solutions wherein all powertrain technologies play an important role meeting diverse need of customers across the segments.”
