Thanks to the Indian customers’ penchant for SUVs, there has been a steady inflow of crossovers of all sizes and shapes that are being marketed as SUVs. It can be said that the year 2015 was dominated by compact crossovers. For next year, even smaller SUVs are being prepped in an attempt to lure the budget car buyers. Here is a list of 6 upcoming small SUVs in 2016 under a base price of INR 6 lakhs.
Mahindra XUV100 (S101)
Likely to be named as XUV100, Mahindra’s micro crossover which is at the final phase of testing will adopt the Renault Kwid’s highly successfully formula but in a higher segment. Whereas the Kwid targets budget hatchbacks like Maruti Alto and Hyundai Eon, the XUV100 will gun for the Maruti Swift, Ford Figo, and Tata Bolt. Expect new petrol and diesel engines to be on offer. To be ready by January 2016, the XUV100 is estimated to have a price range of around INR 3.9-5.9 lakhs (ex-showroom).
Maruti Brezza (YBA)
Again, Brezza is a tentative name and YBA is a codename. The production version of the XA Alpha concept is a direct rival of the Ford EcoSport. The sub-4 m compact crossover from Maruti will adopt a new global platform and is likely to derive its engine options from the popular Swift. Pricing is expected in the range of INR 4.99 – 8.5 lakh (ex-showroom). The Maruti Brezza could be ready as early as January 2016.
Mahindra Quanto facelift
The Quanto is neither a crossover nor a new product but a comprehensive redesign and a sub-4m length makes it eligible to be featured in the list. The idea behind the co-existence of the new Quanto and TUV300 is to have a wider coverage of the lucrative compact SUV segment. Powertrain is mostly likely to be shared with the TUV, including the AMT. Expect the refreshed Quanto to be out shortly after the XUV100.
Going by the Renault Kwid’s outstanding response in the entry level car market, its Datsun twin appears poised to become the brand’s game changer. Market positioning is expected to be at par with the Kwid, making the redi-Go a micro crossover to watch out for. The car would debut at the Auto Expo 2016 in February.
Maruti’s 2016 roadmap includes a second small SUV, even smaller than the Brezza. Slated to be launched in India during next festive season (September 2016), the Ignis was already unveiled in Japan. For India, both petrol and diesel powertrains would be offer. The Ignis would go after the XUV100 with an estimated price range of INR 4.5 – 6.5 lakhs (ex-showroom).
Tata may be a bit late to the party but the Nexon (codename Osprey) is a very important product for the automaker. Previewed at the Auto Expo 2014, the Nexon will pickup a fight with the EcoSport and Brezza. The Bolt/Zest platform-based compact crossover is likely to retain between INR 4.99 – 8.5 lakhs (ex-showroom).
