Tata Motors is preparing an SUV onslaught to Rise above Mahindra (pun intended?). The Sports Utility Vehicle segment is growing faster than the industry itself, now. As the first local automaker to offer and SUV in India, and as the owner of well acclaimed SUV marque, Land Rover, Tata Motors is paving the path to becoming market leader in a short span from now.
Tata Motors is the creator of some of the most lucrative car segments in India, of which two are urban SUV and rural UV categories. Tata Safari debuted the former segment and Tata Sumo the latter. About a decade ago, the company had around 25 percent market share in the utility space. Eventually, Mahindra Scorpio and Bolero took over from the two, some 7 or 8 years ago, and Tata now has only 5 percent share.
Upcoming Tata SUV blitzkrieg will comprise of a sub-4 metre crossover based on Tata Nexon concept, a premium SUV based on Hexa concept, a rugged SUV for rural markets based on new Tata Raptor platform, the Tata-JLR joint venture variants codenamed Q501 and Q502, a 7-seater crossover on X1 platform, codenamed X107, and a a 9-seater model on X6 platform, codenamed X602.
Further, new versions of Tata Sumo, Safari, Safari Storme and Aria will add to the arsenal, to try and overwhelm Mahindra & Mahindra in the serious SUV race.
