Volkswagen Cross Polo 1.2 vs Ford EcoSport 1.5, India drives a diesel compact SUV


Volkswagen, Europe’s leading car makers, have on Thursday launched the new variant of its Polo hatchback called the Cross Polo in India. Priced at INR 7.75 lakhs (ex showroom Delhi), the sporty Cross Polo is set to compete against both the Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport and is also expected to boost sluggish sales in India ahead of the forthcoming festive season.

What youre getting is a Polo with a rough road package that appeals to compact SUV buyers in India with its premium hatchback qualities and sporty style. Volkswagen Cross Polo measures 3,987mm in length, 1,488mm in height and 1,698 mm in width, has a ground clearance of 168 mm and boot capacity of 280 litres.

Ford Ecosports measures 3999 mm in length, 1708 mm in height and 1765 mm in width, has a ground clerance of 200 mm, and boot space of 346 litres. Both cars have a 5-speed manual transmission. As per ARAI confirmation, Volkswagen Cross Polo fuel consumption is at 22.07 kmpl. Fuel Consumption for Ford EcoSport stands at 22.70 kmpl on the highway, and 16 kmpl in city driving.

On the safety front, Cross Polo advanced occupant safety sees ABS (Anti-lock brake system), and Dual frontal airbags, on driver and co-passenger side. For Ford EcosSport 1.5 diesel Ambiente MT, none of teh above safety features are included. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) finds it’s way in all of teh other EcoSport diesels while driver and passenger airbags are found in the Titanium, and Titanium(O) variants.

Volkswagen Cross Polo 1.2-litre TDI engine maximum power stands at 75 PS (55 kW) @4200rpm and max torque of 180 Nm @2000 rpm. For Ford EcoSport, the 1.5 diesel engine records max power of 91 (67) Bhp @ 3750 rpm, and max torque of 204 Nm @ 2000-2750 rpm. Cross Polo fuel tank capacity is 45 litres whereas EcoSport has a 52 litre fuel tank. Cross Polo sales have commenced and the 3 available colors are Flash Red, Deep Black Pearl and Reflex Silver. Despite a smaller engine it has no choice but to compete with EcoSport where performance, fuel efficiency and auto emissions are concerned.
