Codenamed Polo Stuffe, the new Volkswagen India car will be launched in the sub 4-meter category. It will be offered with a 1.2 liter petrol engine and 1.5 liter four cylinder diesel options, with both engines being mated to a five speed manual transmission.
The compact sedan will be positioned below the Vento. It will enter the compact sedan segment which has seen much success in the country. Based on the Polo, new Volkswagen India compact sedan will sit on a similar wheelbase as seen on the Polo hatchback, which is 2456 mm. Features on offer will include a revised headlamp and grille design, tail lamp in a shape similar to that seen on the Vento. On the inside, expect a tad lower quality interiors, with a similar layout as seen on Polo. Centre console will be much the same as that seen on both Polo and Vento.
To be produced from Volkswagen India plant in Chakan, Pune, this new sedan is expected to be launched in a price range from INR 5 to 8 lakhs. Competitors will be in the form of Maruti Swift DZire, Ford Figo sedan, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest and Hyundai Xcent.
As a part of Prime Minister’s Make in India campaign, Volkswagen India will be expanding its portfolio with entry into both compact sedan and compact SUV segments. Investments to the tune of INR 1,500 crores are being planned for Volkswagen Grpoup’s two plants in India- Chakan and Aurangabad. The company is looking to make India a low cost manufacturing hub catering to both developed and emerging markets. The company also targets exports to 70,000 units during the year.
