Volkswagen Polo GT 1.2 TSi discontinued – BS6 1.0 TSi Polo, Vento debut

The new BS6 Volkswagen Polo GT and Vento TSi has ditched the proven 7-speed DSG for a 6-speed torque-converter

Volkswagen India has launched the updated BS6-compliant Polo hatchback and Vento sedan. With the update, the German brand has discontinued the familiar 1.5-litre TDi diesel, 1.6-litre MPi petrol and the much-loved 1.2-litre TSi turbo petrol motor. The company has introduced a new BS6 1.0-litre TSi engine as a replacement alongside a 1.0-litre MPi NA petrol unit. The sad part is that the TSi engine is no longer coupled to the proven 7-speed DSG (DCT), but a 6-speed torque-converter. Volkswagen India had introduced a range of BS6 products at Auto Expo 2020, including the new T-ROC.

Ex-showroom prices for the MY2020 BS6 Volkswagen Polo start at Rs 5.82 lakh and go up to Rs 7.80 lakh for the regular 1.0 MPi variants (Trendline, Comfortline and Highline Plus) that are mated to a 6-speed manual. The higher 1.0 TSi range (Highline Plus and GT) is available in the range of Rs 8.02-9.59 lakh while mated to either a 6-speed manual or the new automatic transmission. Here is a video by AutoTrendTV explaining the same:

The base Polo is priced the same as its BS4 counterpart even though the higher 1.0 MPi variants see a hike of roughly Rs 4,000. The top-of-the-line Volkswagen Polo GT 1.0 TSi has actually become cheaper than its older 1.2 avatar by about Rs 17,000 since a torque-converter is a simpler system than a dual-clutch automatic. The lighter engine loses a cylinder as well, thus promising higher fuel efficiency and lower maintenance — need not always be the case for a lower-capacity engine.

The Volkswagen Polo GT TSi is no hot-hatch. Still, it is a capable car to drive and was the first hatchback in India to feature a dual-clutch transmission. Volkswagen’s DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) units are arguably the best in the business and the new 6-speed torque-converter can never become a worthy replacement, except when it comes to pricing and long-term maintenance. This the first time that the Volkswagen Polo’s turbo petrol variant is coming with a manual option.

Coming to the BS6 Volkswagen Vento, the sedan is available only with the new 1.0-litre TSi three-cylinder turbo petrol mill. The 6-speed manual variants (Trendline, Comfortline, Highline and Highline Plus) are priced in the range of Rs 8.86-11.99 lakh while the 6-speed AT range (Highline and Highline Plus) are available from Rs 12.09-13.29 lakh. Prices have gone up by around Rs 10,000-12,000.

The new 1.0-litre TSi engine is good for 110bhp and 175Nm (the old 1.2 unit made 103bhp and 175Nm). The lesser 1.0-litre MPi three-pot makes only 75bhp and 95Nm and is the very definition of being underpowered (for the Polo’s size).
