Seeing rise in demand for hot hatchbacks, Volkswagen India has plans to launch new Polo GTI in the country. Powered by a 1.8 liter TSI petrol engine, Polo GTI will be the most powerful hatchback to be on sale in India once launched later this month.
Showcased earlier this year at the 2016 Auto Expo, new VW Polo GTI is expected to be offered in 2-door as well as 4-door configuration in India (both variants have already been spied testing in India). Ahead of imminent launch, VW India has started revealing teasers of the upcoming hatchback.
As compared to the old Polo GTI’s 1.4 liter TSI engine, this new 1.8 liter heart generates more power and torque, at the same time being more efficient. As per Volkswagen, this engine delivers 192 PS power (between 4,200 and 6,200 rpm) and 320 Nm torque (between 1,450 and 4,200 rpm), which is 12 PS and 70 Nm more than the 1.4 liter motor of old Polo GTI.
Mated to a seven speed DSG transmission, this motor translates into some mind-boggling performance figures for the segment. New Volkswagen Polo GTI will be able to accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 6.7 seconds, and will have a top speed of 236 kmph. Mileage claimed is at about 8.85 kmpl. A manual transmission variant with 6-speed gearbox could also be offered.
To differentiate the GTI from standard Polo, you have sportier bumpers, GTI badges, 17 inch alloys, red radiator grille strips, new honeycomb grille, sports suspension (lowering ground clearance by 10 mm in the front and 15 mm at the back), standard LED headlights, GTI roof spoiler, dark red tail light clusters, black grained diffuser, and chrome dual exhaust pipes.
To be sold as CKD, we expect the price of the Polo GTI in India will be in the range of INR 20 lakh on road.
