India bound Volkswagen T Cross SUV crash tested – Scores 5 star

Volkswagen T Cross crash test

All new Volkswagen T Cross SUV has been crash tested by Euro NCAP. The SUV has performed exceptionally well in the crash test, scoring a full 5 star rating. It registered a 97% rating for adult safety, 86% rating for child safety, 81% for pedestrians and 80% where safety assist features are concerned.

The variant which has been crash tested is made in Europe. It is powered by a 1.0 liter petrol TSI turbo engine. This variant has a kerb weight of 1204 kgs. Speaking about safety features on offer with this variant – 4 airbags (2 in front, 1 side head, 1 side chest), lane assist, speed assist, ABS, EBD, etc.

Experts at Euro NCAP commented – “The passenger compartment of the T Cross remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger. VW showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sitting in different positions.”

The new Volkswagen T Cross SUV is set for launch in India sometime in 2020. It will see some changes as compared to its international spec model. It will be positioned on the Volkswagen Group’s new MQB A0 IN platform that has been developed exclusively for Indian market. It is more affordable as against the MQB A0 platform that underpins its international spec model. The new platform is also larger and hence contributes to added cabin space.

The India spec Volkswagen T Cross will be bigger in dimensions. The current T Cross is 4110 mm in length, whereas most cars in that segment are in the 4250-4300 mm range. In order to compete better with rivals in the segment, T Cross in India will be made longer. Below is the detailed crash test report of T Cross.

On the inside, the T-Cross will feature state of the art features like large touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, soft touch materials, leather cover for steering wheel, seats, gear knob, auto AC, rear vents, sunroof, etc.

Once launched, the T-Cross will sit below the Tiguan in the company-line-up in India. Main rivals for the Volkswagen T-Cross in India will be the likes of Hyundai Creta, Maruti S-Cross, Nissan Kicks and the likes. It will be offered in a range of petrol and diesel engines, which will be BS6 compatible. Both manual as well as automatic transmission option will be on offer. Expect price to be in the range of Rs 10-15 lakh range.
