While it is not confirmed, we would love to see Volkswagen Tera in India, pushing sales envelope with a mass-market SUV below Taigun

The MQB A0 based platform has emerged successful for SAVWIPL (Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd) in India. Skoda just launched the Kylaq sub 4m SUV based on this platform for a starting price of just Rs 7.89 lakh (Ex-sh). Thus making the brand more accessible to the masses and boosting sales potential.

Should VW do something similar? Should there be a VW offering in the coveted sub 4m SUV? Is VW Tera that vehicle? Should it launch in India? The answers to these questions will be revealed by Volkswagen in the future. But today, let’s take a look at upcoming VW Tera and what it has to offer.

Tera is Volkswagen’s small crossover SUV based on Polo hatchback. It has to be noted that VW Polo in Brazil is a hatchback version of Virtus sedan sold in India and vice versa. In markets like South Africa, Virtus is sold as Polo Sedan.

In India, Skoda Auto has developed Kylaq sub 4m SUV based on the MQB A0 platform on which Polo and Virtus are also positioned. Like Kylaq, Volkswagen is developing a version of their own, with a similar ethos and approach in the form of Tera. This crossover SUV is currently under testing and was recently spied in Argentina.

Volkswagen Tera will be manufactured in Brazil. Presence of a test mule in Argentina suggests that Volkswagen is considering launching it in other markets outside of Brazil. Argentina is a neighbouring country and poses as a fitting market to launch the new Tera crossover SUV. There may be more intended markets too.

As seen in the spy shots, we can see VW Tera’s side profile, showing stylistic approach. When compared to Skoda Kylaq, Volkswagen Tera has a slightly more curvacious design approach. Tera also looks like it could be shorter in height and slightly longer in length. The test mule was wrapped with camouflage, just like previous ones seen in Brazil.

What to expect?

There are many blackened elements in Volkswagen Tera’s front fascia and alloy wheels. This suggests that Volkswagen might be going for a sporty appeal. Design elements seen on these test mules adhere to Volkswagen family genes. LED headlights with integrated DRLs, active air channels in front bumper and wrap-around LED tail lights are notable elements.

Inside, there will be semblances with VW Polo and Virtus – a large infotainment screen, a digital cockpit among other elements. Under the bonnet, Speculations suggest that Volkswagen Tera will pack a 1.0L 3-cylinder TSI Turbo Petrol engine, mated to either a 6-speed MT or 6-speed torque converter gearbox options.
