Impact on the environment due to production of cars is measured by Energy Consumption, CO2 Emission, Water Consumption, Waste Generation and VOC Emissions. VW Pune Plant has powered on to achieve Volkswagen Think Blue. Factory targets of 2018. The plant has already achieved set targets in Waste Generation, and is close to achieving targets in CO2 Emissions and Energy Consumption as well four years ahead of time.Mr. Andreas Lauenroth (extreme right) with Volkswagen Think Blue. Volkswagen Think Blue. Factory initiative has seen a 30.5 pct reduction in waste generation, and is targeting 21.2 pct reduction in CO2 emission, and 20.6 pct reduction in energy consumption due to various innovative and highly successful ideas coming in from company teams. Volkswagen Pune plant is also making steady progress where achieving water consumption reduction targets are concerned.
In regards to Volkswagen Think Blue. Factory waste generation target, the Pune plant has managed a reduction of 30.5 pct due to achievements in recycling of paint sludge. Moisture content in paint sludge was reduced considerably via centrifuge while paint sludge was recycled to produce primer as a bi-product.
Saving in energy consumption and CO2 emissions came about due to optimization of operation of Air Supply Unit in the company’s Paint Shop, wherein use of CNG was reduced considerably. Installation of high speed low volume fans were introduced to optimise lighting equipment and ventilation. This Volkswagen Think Blue. Factory initiative has also considerably improved working conditions on the shop floor.
Water consumption was reduced by 14 pct due to changes in shower test area and PDI wash system. Various measures hav ebeen undertaken to bring about optimisation of VOC emissions in the Paint Shop in the three years of adopting Volkswagen Think Blue. Factory initiative. VW Pune Plant has achieved 17.3 pct reduction per car in impact on manufacturing processes on the environment.
