Earlier this year, Volkswagen Motorsport India announced Vento Cup 2015, which replaced Polo Cup one-make touring car racing series. Polo Cup India got underway in 2010. Vento Cup 2015 selection rounds were held in Pune. Of 550 registrations, 67 made it to final selection round conducted through a two part Karting qualifier.
16 participants have been selected for Vento Cup 2015. 6 drivers from 2014 Volkswagen Polo R Cup season join in to take the total to 22 drivers on grid. Six racers, including two girls are from Delhi to make up the largest city pool. Two rounds of driver selection were held at Indi Karting Track in Kharadi, Pune. Driver coach Rayomand Banajee briefed prospective drivers in regards to bettering their karting skills. Selected drivers will undergo further training to improve skills and fitness level, and be competition ready.
Selection criteria consideration included consistency, understanding of racing lines, speed, lap times and acceptance for learning. Vento Cup 2015 will get underway following pre-season testing and fitness camp before a competitive Round 1 in July.
Vento Cup 2015 participants hail from 10 cities this year. Apart from 6 drivers from Delhi, participants came from: Guwahati 1, Sikkim 1, Pune 4, Aurangabad 2, Mumbai 1, Hyderabad 3, Coimbatore 2, Bangalore 1, Visakhapatnam 1.
Sirish Vissa, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport India says selected drivers showed skills and eagerness to learn, exactly what needs to be groomed further. Drivers will be trained for fitness and get an opportunity to test race cars on track before Round 1. VW Vento Cup 2015 dates are as follows:
