As a part of the Volvo Cars’ policy to enhance economies of scale, a new 1.5 liter, three cylinder, direct injection, petrol engine now powers the XC40 compact SUV. This engine comes mated to a 6 speed transmission while an optional 8 speed transmission will be introduced next year. This engine will be produced on the same production lines as the Volvo 4 cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
No power or performance figures of this new engine has been detailed but the new engine is also being designed for integration into Twin Engine plug-in hybrids with a pure electric powertrain option for the XC40 SUV also set for launch later.
Volvo XC40 SUV with the new engine is set for a global debut. This is the smallest and most affordable XC model in the Volvo lineup. It will go on sale in international markets in early 2018 and in India later this year. It is positioned below the next generation Volvo XC60 and will compete against the BMW X1, Mercedes GLA and Audi Q3 and is expected to have a price ranging between INR 27-30 lakhs.
Volvo XC40, a 5 seater SUV boasts of a dynamic design with plastic cladding and ground clearance of 211mm. Its cabin is spacious and smart and done up in contrasting colors of Lava and Charcoal and is seen with extensive use of Nappa leather and nubuck seats.
Volvo is also developing the world’s first air ventilated dashboard mounted sub-woofer and the central console sports a smartphone holder with wireless charger, a trash bin with spring flap opening and compartment for storage.
On board infotainment is via a 13 speaker Harman Kardon music system and safety features include city safety, run off road alert, cross traffic alert, brake support and park assist with a 360 degree camera. ABS, EBD is offered as standard and Pilot Assist with radar based cruise control system is also on offer.
