With rise in demand for entry level luxury hatchbacks, Volvo is keen to increase their presence in this segment. By the middle of 2015, the Swedish company plans to launch V40 hatchback and V40 Cross Country petrol variant in India, both in the under Rs 30 lakh price bracket.
Set to take on BMW 1 Series, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and B-Class, Volvo V40 hatchback is expected to be priced in a range of INR 23-28 lakhs. Basically, a lower priced version of the Volvo V40 Cross Country, which is priced at INR 32 lakhs in India for the diesel variant.
Akin to V40 Cross Country in construction and underpinnings, Volvo V40 hatchback bears some difference where exterior styling is concerned. The hatchback sports different front and rear bumpers while also receiving horizontal Daytime Running Lights. Interiors are also similar to the V40 Cross Country but with limited features, while split rear seats can be folded down to enhance luggage compartment.
Engine specifications on board Volvo V40 hatchback, which will be offered in a front wheel drive D3 variant, will see a 2.0 liter turbocharged diesel engine offering 152 PS power and 360 Nm torque.
Speaking about the V40 Cross Country petrol variant, it will be powered by Ford’s 1.6l EcoBoost engine, generating 150 PS. This will also be priced in the sub Rs 30 lakh bracket. Launch of new V40 variants will be followed by Volvo XC90 SUV later this year.
With these new launches, Volvo is aiming at 65% growth in India during the current year, with sales to reach a target of 2,000 units.
