Volvo V40 Cross Country and R-Design unveiled in Paris
Designed according to its 1997 predecessor the V70 Cross Country, the new Volvo V40 Cross Country is designed for a sense of adventure. It is an amalgamation of austerity and sophistication and combines the class leading facilities of overall comforts, driving dynamics and the best in safety technology while fuel economy is at its best.
There are a number of firsts seen in its makeup. For starters the Volvo V40 Cross Country is the only car in its class to be offered with Pedestrian Detection Technology. It is also fitted with Start/Stop, Bluetooth hands free communication and wireless music.
V40 Cross Country is a more brawny and muscular vehicle as compared to the V40 and hence appeals to customers who prefer the outdoors and a more adventurous lifestyle. It is fitted with fuel efficient diesel engines like a five cylinder 2.0 liter D4 turbo diesel which offers 177 hp and 400 Nm torque. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes place in 7.9 seconds which fuel consumption stands at 64 mpg and CO2 emissions at 117 g/km with a manual gearbox while it is at 54 mpg and 137 g/km with an automatic gearbox.
Volvo hopes to concentrate on Europe and China where sales are concerned and are targeting sales of 17,000 units per year. Prices will be made known in October as production will commence from the company production plant in Gnent, Belgium in November with first deliveries being made in January 2013.

VOLVO CAR CORPORATION LAUNCHES V40 CROSS COUNTRY
Volvo Car Corporation paved the way for a totally new segment with the V70 Cross Country when launched in 1997. Now, 15 years later, the all-new Volvo V40 Cross Country brings the unique blend of capable ruggedness and expressive elegance up to a new altitude by establishing the Cross Country name in the premium C-segment.
“The new V40 Cross Country is built on the heritage that started with the V70 Cross Country back in 1997. It is designed for those who want a sense of adventure in their everyday life,” says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Car Corporation.
Elegant, refined premium crossover
The V40 Cross Country combines class-leading driving dynamics, interior comfort and a rugged personality with low emissions (99g/km CO2 on D2 models), impressive fuel economy and pioneering safety technology.
Start/Stop is fitted as standard across the range,together with Bluetooth hands-free communication and wireless music playing, plus City Safety auto-braking technology and the V40’s world-first pedestrian airbag. The V40 Cross Country is also the only car in its class to be available with Pedestrian Detection technology.
The V40 Cross Country is the third variant of the V40 to be revealed – it has a more rugged style than the standard V40, and is also distinct to the sports styling of the R-Design model. Appealing to customers that want a more rugged look, it features a number of unique details:
Sleek silver roof rails
Alloy wheels available up to 19-inch
Contrasting front bumper, honeycomb mesh grille and upright day-running lights
Sculpted, contrasting sills
Contrasting rear bumper with integrated skid plate
Inside, the Raw Copper exterior launch colour is echoed in the contrasting stitching – and it can be emphasized even further by choosing the Copper Dawn centre stack inlay.

D2 version with class-leadingCO2 emissions of 99 g/km
The D2 version of the V40 Cross Country comes with CO2 emissions at a class-leading 99 g/km – so there’s no road tax to pay – while fuel costs are also kept low with up to 74 mpg fuel economy. The 1.6-litre diesel engine has 115 hp and 285 Nm of torque, including 15Nm over-boost. The D2 engine is combined with a six-speed manual gearbox and start/stop function.
The five-cylinder 2.0-litre D4 turbo-diesel has been optimised for fuel-efficient driving pleasure. It delivers 177 hp and has torque of 400 Nm across a wide rpm range. Acceleration from 0-60 mph takes 7.9 seconds with the automatic gearbox (8.2 sec with manual). Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are 64 mpg (117 g/km) with a manual gearbox and 54 mpg (137 g/km) with the automatic (EU Combined).
In addition there is the 2.0-litre D3 producing 150 hp and 350 Nm of torque.
Both turbo-diesels are available with a six-speed automatic transmission or six-speed manual gearbox.
All-Wheel-Drive enhances capability
The V40 Cross Country features class-leading driving dynamics with All-Wheel-Drive as standard on the T5 petrol turbo to enhance the all-road, all-weather, capability.
The five-cylinder 2.5-litre T5 engine has a power output of 254 hp and 400 Nm of torque, including 40 Nm over-boost delivered during acceleration. It comes with automatic transmission and acceleration from 0-60 mph takes 6.0 seconds. Fuel consumption is 34 mpg (EU Combined).
There is also the T4 petrol, a 1.6-litre GTDi engine with 180 horsepower and maximum torque of 270 Nm, including 30 Nm over-boost. Fuel consumption is 51 mpg. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of 129 g/km.
Hill Descent Control
To make altitude-changing adventures more comfortable for the driver, the V40 Cross Country also features Hill Descent Control on the T5 AWD version, which controls the car’s speed automatically when driving down steep inclines. The V40 T5 AWD Cross Country also has a practical Hill Hold function that makes starting on a hill easier.
Smooth Automatic Transmissions
The T5 version comes with an automatic six-speed Geartronic gearbox only, while the T4 is available with the automatic six-speed Powershift transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox. The Powershift operates in principle as two parallel manual gearboxes with separate clutches, a system that provides quick and fuel-saving gear changes.
Start/Stop on all versions
All petrol and diesel engine versions have start/stop and braking energy regeneration, no matter whether they are fitted with a manual or automatic gearbox.
Versatility for life’s little adventures
The two-piece, 40/60 split, rear seat backrest can be easily folded, and the car can be equipped with a versatile “extra” floor in the load compartment that provides a concealed storage area and also creates several other useful possibilities:
Fold it up and get a grocery holder
Fold it away and get best luggage volume
Flat floor for loading long items
Flip it over to protect items and maximize cargo volume
The front passenger seat can also be folded forward to create even more space for extra long objects.
The accessory range includes a Parcel Shelf Net that keeps smaller items secure and in order, as well as a Load Organiser that includes a load compartment divider, a load belt and two floor rails.
Below the armrest is a storage compartment suitable for CDs and other small items, whilst also housing the connector for a USB/iPod. The armrest itself can be adjusted to provide extra support for the driver. Two cup-holders and a 12V power outlet are integrated in the console in front of the armrest.
The glove compartment includes space for two drinks cans or bottles that are kept cool with cold air from the Electronic Climate Control system.
Another smart detail for the keen winter adventurer is the specially designed, drained storage unit for an ice scraper in both front door panels.
Seven different mood light options
The interior lighting is designed to give a “theatre lighting” feel. LED lamps are used to light up strategic areas. The driver can enjoy a red-to-blue setting that adapts the light to the interior temperature, or choose between another seven mood themes. The reading lights front and rear can be dimmed.
The V40 Cross Country can also be specified with a stylish TFT digital instrument cluster, which allows the driver to select one of three modes – Elegance, Performance or Eco – depending on what information they prefer to see while driving.
Keep in touch via mobile application
There is also a mobile application that makes sure that the driver can stay in touch with the parked car via an iPhone or Android smart phone. An extension of Volvo On Call, the app opens up a range of connectivity possibilities, is free to download via the iPhone and Android app stores and is designed to offer the owner an intuitive, easy-to-use relationship with the car from a distance. The app allows users to view information about their car on their mobile phone, so a driver can check fuel levels before starting their journey for example, or get information on wiper fluid or oil levels, or check whether the car has been locked.
Focus on Europe and China
Volvo Car Corporation expects to sell 17,000 units per year of the new Volvo V40 Cross Country. Around 50 per cent of the total volume will go to European customers and around 30 percent to Chinese buyers. UK sales are expected to be between 1200-1500 in the first full year.
The V40 Cross Country will be built alongside the standard V40 and R-Design models at Volvo Car Corporation’s production plant in Ghent, Belgium. Prices will be announced and orders taken in early October, with production starting in November. Customer deliveries are expected to start during January 2013.

Dynamic look and agile drive for individualists with a fast pace
Launched in stunning Rebel Blue, the new Volvo V40 R-Design is a perfect match for those who want a head-turner that radiates a truly stylish and dynamic look. The visual promise of a life in the fast lane is confirmed by the driver-centric interior and an intense, agile driving experience with performance up to 254 horsepower.

The attention-grabbing exterior has been specially developed for buyers who want to put their very own stamp on their car.
The unique R-Design front features a silk-metal framed high-gloss grille. The sporty stance is further enhanced with an ironstone diffuser, silk-metal finished details and twin exhaust tailpipes. The five-spoke diamond-cut wheels (17″ or 18″) complete the stylish, dynamic look.
On top of the Rebel Blue livery, the V40 R-Design buyer has a choice of six other exterior colours.
New generation R-Design interior with blue interactive dashboard
The interactive dash board in the all-new V40 has already got a lot of positive attention, both from media and customers. The possibility to switch between three layouts with different configuration and functionality – Elegance, Eco and Performance – is mirrored in the V40 R-design. But here all of the modes come in the same radiant blue colour.
“Inside, the new generation R-Design seats and interior details emphasize the distinctive Scandinavian design aura of the all-new V40. R-Design appeals especially to customers that love active driving and a personal, expressive design. We have talked to them a lot to ensure that every single detail contributes to the individualistic, refined expression they desire,” says Lex Kerssemakers.
The seats feature a blend of black Nubuck textile and perforated leather, crowned by an embroidered R-design logo with a blue “R”. Full leather seats are available as an option.
The comfortable, in-command driver environment also includes a specially designed steering wheel, gear shifter, handbrake and sport pedals. The unique R-Design aura is enhanced by a combination of new aluminium inlays with a perforated look, black leather, matching stitching and a black headliner.
Sporty drive with a wide range of engines
R-Design can be combined with all engines available for the all-new Volvo V40, from the D2 diesel with 115 horsepower and CO2 emissions at 94 g/km (3.6 l/100 km) to the high-performance T5 petrol turbo with 254 horsepower.
“Creating a driving experience that fulfils the R-Design buyers´ passion for a fast-paced life is not just about speed and acceleration. Agility and precision are equally important for these performance-minded individuals. Both the standard Dynamic chassis and the optional Sport chassis are designed to offer a class-leading, intense driving experience, no matter if you prioritise maximum fuel-efficiency or rapid acceleration,” says Lex Kerssemakers.
Lower and firmer Sport chassis
The chassis has been developed in cooperation with Swedish racing driver Robert Dahlgren in the Volvo Polestar Black R team.
The optional Sport chassis is lowered 10 mm compared with the Dynamic chassis. Springs and shock absorbers have a firmer setting, resulting in responsive driving pleasure with full control. The front McPherson struts have 25 mm piston rods. The stiffness enables the structure to absorb lateral loads better.
At the rear the V40 has monotube dampers, featuring compression and return damping via the same valve. This gives shorter, faster fluid flow, which in turn means that the damper responds more quickly. Anti-roll bars with increased diameter also contribute to the sporty drive.
The standard Dynamic chassis’ rigid body and low centre of gravity also promote an alert, quick-responding character that focuses on the driving experience, yet without compromising ride comfort.
“The V40 R-Design is agile, responsive and fun to drive. Both chassis offer the enthusiastic driver a feeling of total control. You get both that connected response that makes a winding country road so much fun as well as the precise, nimble moves it takes to stay on top of busy urban traffic,” says Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Corporation.
Driver orientated appeal attracts younger buyers too
The new Volvo V40 R-Design will be available in all markets that sell the Volvo V40. Volvo Car Corporation expects that around 10 percent of all V40 buyers will choose the R-Design version.
“Previous R-Design models have played an important role for increasing our sales and for lowering the age of our customer base. We believe that the new V40 R-Design will give this trend another boost,” says Lex Kerssemakers.
