The car will initially be available with the 1.2-litre MPI petrol engine.

Launch of the VW Ameo diesel variant is reported to be delayed as the 1.5-litre EA189 engine is due for an upgrade in the coming months. VW India apparently decided to introduce the updated variant of the engine in the Ameo.

The update which involves a new turbocharger is said to take the power output to 112 bhp (a gain of around 7 bhp over the existing version). After debuting in the Ameo, the new oil burner will also serve the Polo GT TDI, Vento and the facelifted Skoda Rapid. The time frame for the launch of diesel Ameo is not clear but we expect it happen in the festive season (September – November).

The Ameo is expected to be launched in June with a lone petrol engine option.

So, when the compact sedan goes on sale in June, it will be available only with the 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. Paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, the motor belts out a rather modest 75 bhp and 110 Nm of torque.

The Ameo will be counting on its premium appeal to make headway in a segment which is populated by the Maruti Dzire, Tata Zest, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and Ford Figo Aspire. Salient features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, touchscreen infotainment system, rain sensing wipers, cruise control, etc.
