The Ameo is developed specifically for India.

The VW Ameo sub-4 sedan based on the Polo platform has been spotted in Mumbai during one of its routine test runs. The India-specific sedan which made its world premiere shortly ahead of the Auto Expo 2016 in Delhi will be aimed at the Maruti Dzire, Hyunda Xcent, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest and Ford Figo Apsire.

In an internal letter to its employees, VW India reportedly hinted that the company’s ongoing global dieselgate cost-cutting measures could hamper the launch plans of Ameo if the plant’s production targets aren’t met. The intense testing of the car, however, suggests that things are progressing as per plan. The sedan is slated to be launched in June.

The Ameo aims to cater to customers who are looking for a premium compact sedan.

The Ameo’s styling follows the typical instant sedan recipe of slapping a boxy boot to a hatchback. The interior too is lifted from the Polo but adopts dual-tone beige-black color theme.

The sub-4 VW sedan is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine and a 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine. While a 5-speed manual transmission will be standard across the range, the diesel engine is also likely to be offered with an option of 7-speed DSG.

The interior has been borrowed from the Polo.

The VW Ameo will be positioned as the most premium compact sedan. The features list includes cruise control, automatic climate control, touchscreen infotainment system with MirrorLink, rain sensing wipers, dual air-bags, ABS with EBD, etc.
