VW Compact Sedan spied inside out on Pune-Mumbai Expressway

The new VW Compact Sedan for India, which is reportedly going to be named Ameo once launched in the first half of 2016, has been spied once again. The latest spy shots were captured when the car was making test runs on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway.

Built at an investment of INR 720 crore, the new VW Ameo sedan will be manufactured at the company’s plant in Chakan near Pune. VW India officially stated last month that they have started preparing the production line to start manufacturing their compact sedan.

Based on the same platform which also underpins the Polo and Vento, spy shots reveal that not only body panels, but also interiors of Ameo will be borrowed from its older siblings. Front seems to be very similar to the Polo family, while side profile of the car is something in between the Polo and Vento. Alloy wheels are similar to those of Vento and are wrapped around 185 / 60 R15 Apollo tyres. Rear seems a bit stubbed, thanks to the sub 4 meter norm.

It will be interesting to see how the car looks from rear, as that and C pillar are the design angles which will receive a complete makeover. Interiors of Ameo get a dual tone finish of black and beige, exactly like in the Polo. Only a few mm longer than the Polo, Ameo will feature more rear legroom and boot space.

New VW Ameo will be offered in a choice of petrol and diesel engine options. This will be in the form of 1.2 liter 3-cyl generating 75 PS and 110 Nm, while diesel engine will be in the form of 1.5 liter 4-cyl generating 90 PS and 230 Nm torque. Both these options will be mated to a five speed gearbox.

VW could also offer the Ameo in GT TSI and GT TDI form (the sporty, flat bottomed steering wheel spied makes a strong point). These will be powered by the more powerful options of the same engine. Petrol GT gets a 105 PS / 175 Nm engine mated to a 7 speed DSG while diesel GT gets 105 PS / 250 Nm engine mated to a 5 speed MT.

Expected to be priced in the range of INR 5.5-8.5 lakh, new VW compact sedan will rival the likes of Maruti DZire, Hyundai Xcent, Honda Amaze, Ford Figo Aspire and Tata Zest upon launch.
