Mr. Davy Tuilan, Head of Sales and Marketing, Suzuki Indomobil Sales (SIS), confirmed commencement of Karimun Wagon R test run with AMT. Conventional gearbox will remain unaltered, just the AMT system will be coupled to shifter and clutching mechanism.
Indonesian Wagon R on sale is pushed by 1.0 litre 3 cylinder all aluminium K10B petrol engine, same as that in Indian model. It produces 68 PS (66.6 bhp) max. power @ 6,200 rpm and 90 Nm peak torque @ 3,500 rpm, mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox.
It will be interesting to know how Suzuki would position the Karimun Wagon R AMT, with 3 variants GA, GL and GX on offer as of now. Mileage claimed is 18.9 kmpl to 20.51 kmpl in gasoline variant. Fuel efficiency of AMT version may stand on par with manual transmission variants.
Considering Indian market, there are high chances that Wagon R and Alto K10 will be offered with AMT. With increasing popularity of AMT and grand success of Celerio, Maruti Suzuki may exploit the technology, offering AMT as an option in most of its products.
