WAVE – World Advanced Vehicle Expedition is all set to embark on an awareness campaign whereby greater emphasis will be shown towards use of electric vehicles in the country. Rising pollution levels in cities across India are causing some serious concerns and hence an urgent need to push for cleaner and greener fuel consumption and increase use of electric vehicles.
WAVE will be conducting a 15 day long campaign in major cities across India, including Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad where road shows will be held organized by Mr. Louis Palmer who is a well known environmentalist and speaker, as well as, tour director for this leg of WAVE. Louis Palmer is also associated with the Zero Race, the first Electric Cars race around the world in 80 days. He has also been awarded the 2011 “Champion of the Earth” Award of UNEP – United Nations Environment Programme. This apart, Louis Palmer is the first person to circumnavigate the planet in a solar powered vehicle, Solartaxi.
The road trip will be flagged off from Mumbai on December 3rd and will traverse across 4 major cities in India besides some of the smaller towns along the route. The Road trip will also traverse smaller cities like Kolhapur, Belgaum, Chitradurga, etc. With Techfest 2012 scheduled for 6th to 8th January, this seems just the right start for IIT Bombay. The electric car teams will have a day at major cities for their awareness campaign to showcase the need for a cleaner and greener environment in India, and will demonstrate existing sophisticated solutions to lower CO2 emissions. The teams will conduct lectures in schools and colleges besides displaying electric vehicles in the cities. The focus is on renewable energy sources for mobility. Meetings with government officials and press conferences are on the WAVE agenda too.
The electric cars coming to India are the Twike Electric, Think City, Renault Twingo, and Mahindra REVA. The EV’s are being shipped from Switzerland to Mumbai and back. The last WAVE held in September 2011 was a European event with the journey being from Paris to Prague. The twenty participating electric vehicles traversed 10 international cities between 11th and 25th September, 2011.
