Woman traffic cop slapped, kicked by traffic offender over INR 500 fine

Constable Priyanka Khot, 30, of Vile Parle police was conducting nakabandi along with other cops at the Mahila Sangh School, Vile Parle when they stopped scooterist Aarti Patlekar, 23, who was riding without a helmet.

On being asked to pay a fine of INR 500 for failing to wear a helmet, Patlekar got abusive and beat up Priyanka Khot. Patlekar started arguing with Khot, she accused her and the police department of corruption and said she would only pay INR 100. Though Khot tried to calm Patlekar down, she continued with her abuses. Patlekar even went upto an elderly male constable and started abusing him while she finally slapped Khot and kicked her in the stomach.

Patlekar then proceeded to call up her brother Sudarshan Patlekar (30), who also threatened the cop by taking names of his contacts in the vicinity while he threatened her with enough clout to get her suspended.

The fracas only ended when more policemen arrived on the spot and took the brother-sister duo into custody. They have been booked U/s 353 and 332 of IPC for arguing and assaulting a public servant. They were brought to the magistrate’s court on Tuesday and kept in police custody for a day.

This incident is one of many that have been noted in recent times. Earlier this month, on 1st September, traffic constable Devidas Nimbalkar was accosted by a two-wheeler rider at the VB Nagar, Kurla area when he signaled him to stop for not wearing a helmet. On the same day, Colaba police have also registered a case against two people from Amravati for manhandling traffic constable Rajendra Pawar.

Yesterday, a cop who was doing his duty of stopping Ganpati Visarjan by the Court prescribed time of 9 PM, was thrashed by 4 youth, two of them even tried to drown the cop in the artificial pond. Somehow the cop managed to escape from there. The episode has been caught on camera. All four youths are absconding.
