Yamaha India’s ex VP of sales and marketing joins Tork Motorcycles

Following a 14 year stint with India Yamaha Motors as Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Roy Kurian, quit the company on January 31, 2019, and has now joined Pune based electric motorcycle startup, Tork Motors.

With this shift, Roy Kurian moves on from selling petrol powered two wheelers to the electric two wheeler segment, with his first project being Tork Motor’s first offering – T6X electric motorcycle.

Tork Motors is the country’s first electric motorcycle manufacturing startup while most other companies are focusing on the electric scooter segment. The company has stated that T6X is in final stages with launch in Pune later this year, to be followed by launch in Bengaluru and then on to other cities across the country.

Tork T6X has been under development since 2015 while bookings opened in 2016. T6X was recently spied on test and will enter production at the company plant in Chakan, Pune. It has proprietary Drivetrain technology called TIROS (Tork Intuitive Response Operating System). It will allow for speeds between 85-100 kmph and a range of 100 km on full charge. Launch date is scheduled by later this year while price is expected at around Rs.1.6 lakhs.

Kapil Shelke, CEO, Tork Motors has stated that the lithium ion battery pack for the T6X will be imported from a South East Asian country. The rest of the components will be procured from 200 local suppliers with the Tork T6X having 90 percent local components.

It will feature a trellis frame with sub frame hinged below the rider’s seat. The frame holds the battery pack with the electric motor positioned behind it. The motor is linked to a chain drive transferring power to rear wheels via a large sprocket.

Suspension includes telescopic front forks and rear monoshock and braking is via 267mm disc brake in the front and 220mm disc brake at the rear with CBS. The T6X sits on 80/100-17 tyre in front and 110/80-17 tyre at the rear. It measures 1,960mm in length, 784mm in width and 1,085mm in height. Wheelbase is at 1,336mm, seat height is at 785mm and ground clearance is at 160mm. The on board technology will include GPS, utility storage, cloud connectivity and phone charging.
