The Yamaha MT-03 naked compact sportsbike which is based on the R3 is all set to make its Indian debut at the Auto Expo 2016 on February 3 (press day). The motorcycle would be aiming to broaden the audience base for the company in India when it goes on sale in Q2 2016.
Rather than adopting Yamaha’s signature naked bike styling which can be seen on the MT-07, the MT-03 builds on the R3‘s styling cues. The simple headlamp is adorned by LED daytime running units and a small visor.
The fuel tank is embellished with stylish air intake pods while the digi-analog instrument console, seats and tailpiece come directly from the R3. New color themes add to the street fighter’s individuality.
The 321 cc parallel-twin liquid-cooled motor produces 42 PS and 29.6 Nm of torque. A 6-speed transmission harnesses the output.
Like the R3, the MT-03 employs telescopic front fork and monoshock rear suspension system. The 298 mm front and 220 mm rear discs are governed by dual-channel ABS system but it remains to be seen whether Yamaha India will offer this safety feature right from day one or not.
The Yamaha MT-03 will compete with the likes of the BMW G 310 R (also to debut at the expo), Kawasaki Z250 and KTM Duke 390. Expect it to be priced slightly lower than its fully faired sibling.
