Festive mood and attractive discounts and offers appear to have boosted motorcycle sales in September, as MoM growth has improved by 11.66 percent. All motorcycle manufacturers have registered positive MoM growth, an encouraging sign amidst on-going slowdown.

However, full recovery may still take some time. YoY sales growth continues to be negative at -18.16 percent. All motorcycle manufacturers have registered negative YoY growth in September 2019.

Total motorcycle sales in September 2019 stood at 10,38,773 units, as compared to 9,30,275 units in previous month and 12,69,250 units in September last year. Hero MotoCorp continues to be the dominant player with sales of 5,48,963 units is September.

Hero’s MoM sales have improved by 14.01 percent whereas YoY sales are down -18.07 percent. Hero motorcycle sales largely comprise its commuter bikes such as Splendor and HF Deluxe. These two contributed around 80% of total motorcycle sales of Hero in September 2019.

At number two, Bajaj sold 1,72,543 units in September 2019, as compared to 1,67,192 units last month and 1,86,126 units in September last year. Bajaj’s YoY de-growth is the lowest at -7.30 percent.

However, festive season sales seem limited, as MoM growth is just 3.20 percent. Just like Hero, Bajaj’s motorcycle sales are driven by its commuter bikes such as CT 100 / CT 110 and Platina. Pulsar range also contributes a significant chunk of the company’s overall sales.

Honda comes in at third place with sales of 1,55,187 units in September 2019. August sales stood at 1,42,587 units whereas sales in September last year were 1,71,974. This translates into MoM gain of 8.84 percent and YoY loss of -9.76 percent. Honda’s motorcycle sales largely comprise products such as CB Shine, CB Unicorn, Dream and Livo.

TVS takes the fourth place with sales of 73,207 units in September 2019. TVS has registered the largest MoM gain of 22.93 percent. Its YoY loss is also the largest at -41.15 percent. August sales stood at 59,550 units, whereas sales in September last year were 1,24,389 units. Top contributors in September included Apache, Radeon, and Sport.

Next is Royal Enfield with sales of 54,858 units in September 2019. MoM sales grew by 12.52 percent while YoY sales are down -21.70 percent. Classic 350 and Bullet 350 generated max sales for Royal Enfield in September 2019.

Yamaha comes in at number six with sales of 28,992 units in September 2019. This translates into MoM gain of 9.14 percent and YoY loss of -28.26 percent. Yamaha FZ has emerged as the top selling motorcycle for the company in September 2019.

Suzuki takes the seventh spot with sales of 5,023 units in September 2019. MoM sales have improved by 21.68 percent while YoY sales are down -19.17 percent. Gixxer 155 was the top selling Suzuki motorcycle in September 2019.
