Mahindra Thar facelift launch on 22nd July 2015

Thanks to its compact size, rugged look, Thar has created a unique place for itself in the Indian auto industry. Already spied on test without any camouflage, Mahindra has confirmed that the launch of Thar facelift will take place on 22nd July.

The current Mahindra Thar in action.

First launched in 2010, Mahindra Thar is manufactured at the company plant in Igatpuri near Nashik. This will be the first facelift the SUV will be receiving.

Speaking about the Thar facelift, spy shots reveal that there is not going to be any major change on board the Thar facelift. Majority of the changes are cosmetic. For eg, Thar facelift gets a plastic/metal bumper, very noticeable side-steps, new canopy and a tilted rear pillar on the exterior.

On the inside, Thar facelift gets new circular AC vents with silver accents, dual tone dashboard, and a new instrument cluster. The gear lever housing is now in beige, and also has two cup holders. Apart from this, what is different is the steering wheel, handbrake lever and AC controls, all three borrowed from Mahindra Bolero.

Currently, Mahindra Thar is available in two engine variants – CRDe and DI. The Thar CRDe is powered by a 2498 cc four cylinder diesel engine delivering 105 hp power at 3800 rpm and 247 Nm torque at 1800 – 2000 rpm. A five speed manual gear box sends power to all four wheels aboard this seven seater variant. This variant is retailed at Rs 7.74 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi.

The other variant is Thar Di. This one is available in 2WD and 4WD options – both powered by a 2523 cc four cylinder diesel engine generating 63 hp and 182.5 Nm torque. Both cars have a five speed gearbox and a seating capacity for seven (two in the front, three in second row and two in the rear, facing each other). The 2WD is priced at 5.04 lakhs, while the 4WD starts from 5.55 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi).

Expect the price of Mahindra Thar facelift to be in a similar range. More details from the launch floor on 22nd July.
