Maruti DZire and Honda Amaze to get at least 3 new competitors

The sub 4 meter sedan segment has received outstanding attention primarily due to its affordable pricing. This segment attracts lower excise duties and is the first choice for buyers upgrading from small cars to affordable sedans.

The segment volume has doubled over the past three years, accounting for almost 15% of the overall car market today, and expected to widen even further. Sadly, not many players are existing in this segment. Ruled only by Maruti Suzuki DZire, the segment saw it’s first challenger to DZire in the form of Honda Amaze, which was launched last year.

Maruti DZire and Honda Amaze to get at least 3 new competitorsHonda managed to show the auto industry that it is possible to compete with Maruti in it’s territory. Together, they sold 130k units from June-Nov 2013 period. Despite Honda’s production capacity at just 10,000 units per month, they sold about 42 k units of Amaze in that 6 month period, highlighting the huge demand in the segment.

Now, more manufacturers are going to launch products in this segment. New cars in the sub 4 meter sedan category are all being planned by the three auto majors Hyundai, Tata Motors and Ford. Each of which will be launched in the months ahead and all of which will be priced in a band of INR 5 to 8.5 lakhs, so as to compete with the Swift DZire from Maruti Suzuki and Amaze from Honda.

Hyundai Motors plans its sedan based on the Grand i10 platform which has met with enormous success in India. Tata Motors’ sub 4 meter sedan will be based on the X1 platform and is code named Falcon 5 as on date. Ford India’s upcoming sedan will be based on the B562 platform while Volkswagen is also entering this segment with a sub 4 meter Vento.

Hyundai and Tata are almost ready with their compact sedans, in the form of Grand i10 sedan and Falcon 5 respectively. Sedans from Ford and Volkswagen will come at a later stage. (via)
