VW Compact Sedan, Tiguan and Passat GTE to debut at Auto Expo 2016

VW India has announced that the sub-4 m Compact Sedan which is made for India will world premiere at the Auto Expo 2016 on February 3 (press day). The biennial automotive show will also see the Indian debuts of the new Tiguan and Passat GTE (plug-in hybrid) models.

VW Compact Sedan

Reported to be called as Ameo, the VW Compact Sedan is based on the Polo platform and will carry a stubby boot like its rivals – the Maruti Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest, and Ford Figo Aspire. The heavily localized sedan will give VW India access to a highly lucrative volume-oriented segment.

The car will derive its design, equipment, and powertrain from the Polo hatchback. Expect it to offer safety features like dual airbags and ABS with EBD as standard across the range. The Dzire rival is slated to go on sale in the middle of 2016.

New VW Tiguan

Capitalizing on the premium crossover frenzy, the new Tiguan would be marketed as a 4×4 SUV with car-like handling. More details of the India-spec version would be revealed at the show. Based on the MQB architecture, the new Tiguan is expected to be a CKD import. Positioning would be slightly more premium than the Hyundai Creta.

VW Passat GTE

The Passat GTE plug-in hybrid D-Segment sedan is powered by a 156 PS 1.4-litre TSI turbo petrol engine which is supported by an electric motor. System output stands at an impressive 216 PS while total range is claimed to be 1,000 km. The sedan can cover over 50 km in pure electric mode. If launched in India, the green car would benefit from the government’s FAME subsidy. The automaker has confirmed that the regular version of the Passat sedan will be launched in India soon.

The VW India stall at the Auto Expo 2016 will also showcase the new Beetle, Polo, Vento, Jetta and Cross Polo.
