2019 Bajaj Dominar 400 compared with rivals on price, power, performance

Price of new Dominar starts from Rs 1.74 lakhs, ex-sh.

Deliveries have commenced for 2019 Bajaj Dominar 400, which comes with an updated engine, USD forks, a few cosmetic changes, some added functionalities and new colour option. Priced at Rs 1.74 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), updated Dominar continues with its aggressive pricing strategy.

It is currently the most affordable 400 cc bike in the country. To understand how it fares against rivals, here’s a quick comparison of 2019 Bajaj Dominar 400 vs rivals Honda CB300R, BMW G310R, TVS Apache 310, KTM Duke 390, RE650, etc.

Design and styling: 2019 Bajaj Dominar gets most of the features from the outgoing model with the exception of new wheel colour and blacked-out elements. It also gets a new Auroral Green colour option, which looks sporty and attractive. Except TVS Apache RR 310, all bikes have a naked profile. However, even with all its bodywork, RR 310 does not lack in looks or performance.

Powertrain: Updated Bajaj Dominar continues using the same engine as earlier, but it gets a higher state of tune. With increased compression ratio and DOHC setup, the 373.3 cc engine now makes 39.9 hp of max power and 35 Nm of max torque. Power output is 4.9 hp more than the outgoing model, which brings it closer to that of 390 Duke. KTM 390 Duke shares the same engine as Dominar, but it comes in a higher state of tune, delivering 43.5 hp and 37 Nm. This makes it the most powerful in this group. BMW G 310 R and TVS Apache RR 310 share the same engine and their power and torque output is similar as well.

Chassis: 2019 Bajaj Dominar utilizes a perimeter frame, whereas all three rivals have trellis frame. USD forks have been added to Dominar. There’s an updated monoshock unit as well, which has improved Dominar’s ride quality. All four bikes are equipped with dual-channel ABS, but only 390 Duke offers switchable ABS system. At 184 kg, updated Dominar is the heaviest bike, whereas BMW G 310 R is the lightest at 158.5 kg.

Pricing: Dominar would be the obvious choice for folks who want to buy a 400 cc bike at an affordable price. At Rs 1.74 lakh, 2019 Dominar costs just Rs 11K more than the outgoing model. The costliest is BMW G 310 R (Rs 2.99 lakh), followed by KTM 390 Duke (Rs 2.44 lakh) and TVS Apache RR 310 (Rs 2.23 lakh).
