Maruti Alto beats Dzire to take No 1 spot – 2019 Jan best selling cars list

Top 10 list of best selling cars in India during the past month, saw Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai capture the entire list. There were 7 Maruti Suzuki cars on the list which included the Alto, DZire, Swift, Baleno, Vitara Brezza, WagonR and Celerio. While the first five cars claimed the top 5 spots on the list, WagonR and Celerio were at 9 and 10 position respectively.

It may be noted here that four out of the seven cars in the list, are based on the Heartect platform. Maruti Suzuki had introduced the new WagonR hatchback and 2019 Baleno facelift in the market last month. But, these new launches failed to deliver boost in sales to the company. Domestic sales for Jan 2019 were at 1,39,440 units, a growth of just 0.2 percent as compared to the same month in 2018.

In the top spot, Maruti Alto sales stood at 23,360 units while sales of the DZire and Swift stood at 19,073 units and 18,795 units respectively. At no 4 and 5 was Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Vitara Brezza with sales of 16,717 units and 13,172 units respectively. At no 9 was WagonR with sales of 10,048 units, at no 10 was Celerio, of which 9,217 units were sold in the past month.

Hyundai Cars India had the Elite i20 at No. 6, with a total of 11,749 units sold. It was closely followed by new Creta and Grand i10, which were at no 7 and 8 respectively with sales of 10,314 units and 10,285 units respectively.

Hyundai Grand i10 is poised for a major upgrade by the end of this year, which will make it even more competitive in the segment, which is currently dominated by Maruti Swift. Hyundai has also updated the Elite i20, within a year of launch of its facelifted version. Hyundai India has also updated the Creta SUV for 2019. Together, the top 10 cars registered over 1.42 lakh unit sales in Jan 2019.

Hyundai recorded sales of 45,803 units during January 2019, just 295 units more than 45,508 units sold in January 2018. This was despite the new Hyundai Santro being launched at the end of 2018. Hyundai India next plans to launch sub 4 meter SUV, which is currently known as Carlino Styx.
