2020 Bajaj Chetak electric scooter price will be well under Rs 1.5 L
Bajaj is back in the scooter segment.
Once a leader in scooter segment, Bajaj exited this space in 2009, as it wanted to focus exclusively on motorcycles. However, as things have changed over the years and considering the huge potential for electric scooters, Bajaj has announced its re-entry in this segment.
Today, 16th October 2019, marks the day when Bajaj Auto re-enters the scooter segment. All new Bajaj Chetak electric scooter has been unveiled in India today. This new electric scooter was unveiled at an event in Delhi, at the hands of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant, along with Rajiv Bajaj, Bajaj Auto – Managing Director.
Production of this new Bajaj Chetak electric scooter started last month, on 25th Sep 2019. Production is being done at an all new state of the art, world class electric vehicle plant of Bajaj, located on the outskirts of Pune, India. The plant has over 80% women workforce. Features – 2020 Bajaj Chetak electric scooter comes in with a retro design and premium on-board equipment. It gets curved body panels, a digital instrument console, and smart phone connectivity with over the air updates, Internet of Things (IoT) and features such as geofencing, location tracking, find my scooter and remote start. These features can be accessed by a new phone app, called Bajaj Chetak App.
The new Bajaj Chetak electric scooter sits on 12” alloy wheels fitted with MRF tubeless tyres. It also receives rounded headlamp and chrome on mirrors and front fenders. Where suspension and braking is concerned, the Bajaj Chetak electric scooter gets single sided trailing arm unit in the front and single shock at the rear. Braking in the front is via disc brake, while at the rear there is a drum brake. There is also a regenerative braking system installed in the scooter.
Battery and Range – Exact details about the battery and ride range has not been revealed yet. But Bajaj did say that in Eco mode, the scooter has a range of about 100 kms. The scooter also has a sport mode, as well as a revers-assist mode. In Sport mode, range is about 85 kms. Bajaj says that the range is as per real world test conditions. ARAI certified drive range will be much higher, and will be revealed at launch in Jan 2020.
Battery of the Bajaj scooter is not swappable. It is a IP67 rated lithium battery which will power 4 kW electric motor. Charging is accomplished in 5 hours. Bajaj electric scooter can be charged using any 5 AMP outlet. Fast charging option will not be on offer as Bajaj says the range is quite adequate for daily use, and fast charging will not be required. Bajaj will also retail a home-charging unit along with the scooter at a nominal price. This station will tell you how much energy is consumed to charge the scooter.
Power is delivered via a unique swing-arm mounted motor. Power delivery is via a 5 speed automatic gearbox. Seat is very ergonomic. Bajaj Chetak uses metal parts, instead of plastic – giving the scooter premium quality. There is no Bajaj logo on the new Chetak electric scooter. It will be sold via existing network of Probiking outlets.
Price – Bajaj will officially start the sale of their new Chetak electric scooter from Jan 2020. First city to get the scooter is Pune. In second phase, it will be launched in Bangalore. Bajaj has not revealed price of their new electric scooter, it will be revealed closer to launch date.
Mr Bajaj said that they will not price the scooter very aggressively. It will be a premium scooter. Price will not be above Rs 1.5 lakh. To enable ease of purchase, Bajaj will also offer attractive finance schemes. Lighting system all around is LED. Buttons are touch assist. All Bajaj e-scooters get a keyless start as standard. You also get a premium soft-close glove box.
Bajaj Auto will be selling only electric vehicles under the Urbanite brand and hence one can expect to see more such electric scooters rolling off production lines in the months ahead. This first electric scooter, positioned in a premium segment, will compete with the other electric offerings from Okinawa Scooters, Hero Electric, Ather Energy, Ampere Electric Vehicles and Twenty Two Motors.
