2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class launched in Europe with significant updates

The 2021MY Mercedes-Benz G-Class’ 400d diesel variant is finally available in all trims

German automaker Mercedes-Benz has updated its popular G-Class mid-size luxury AWD SUV for 2021 model year. The changes extend to aesthetics, equipment, personalisation, etc., and apply to units produced from the start of September for European markets. Considering the brand’s long-running success story in India, one can expect the updated W464 ‘G-Wagen’ to hit our roads (in BS6 format) possibly in the first half of next year.

Prices for the new Euro-spec G-Class are as follows:

  • G350d – 99,446.80 euro (Rs 85.15 lakh)
  • G400d – 102,694.80 euro (Rs 87.93 lakh)
  • G63 – 154,309 euro (Rs 1.32 crore)

One of the main highlights of the 2021MY G-Class is that its diesel-powered G400d variant is available in all trims and configurations. There is a new ‘Desert’ drive mode (accessible via Dynamic Select rocker switch) that adjusts the powertrain’s shifts, throttle response and ESP levels to make the SUV a “desert champion”. Parking Package (with reverse camera) comes standard. There are three new shades as well: Classic Grey, Deep Green and China Blue.

In terms of personalisation, Night Package is available without having to opt AMG Line or Stainless Steel Package. It comprises of heat-insulating extra-tinted glass, Obsidian Black Metallic exterior elements and darkened lamps. The SUV rides on 20-inch 5-spoke wheels that were previously available only with AMG Line. Colour choices include High-gloss Black or Himalaya Grey.

On the inside, Widescreen Cockpit and frameless IRVM are now standard. Subtle additions extend to silver window controls, Dinamica microfibre sun visors and black floor mats (with AMG logo in AMG Line). Security equipment comes as part of either Urban Guard Vehicle Protection or its ‘Plus’ version, boasting of functionalities such as anti-theft alarm, tow-away protection (visual and audible warning), interior movement detection, parking collision detection, geo-tracking and more. The service is free for the first three years.

Mercedes-Benz G-Glass Specs

In India, the Mercedes-Benz G350d (priced from Rs 1.50 crore ex-showroom) is powered by a BS6-compliant 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine packing almost 282bhp @ 3,400rpm and 600Nm @ 1,200-3,200rpm. The higher G400d discussed above churns out 326bhp @ 3,400rpm and 700Nm @ 1,200-3,200rpm from the same power plant. Both variants are coupled to a 9G-TRONIC 9-speed TC automatic transmission

Mercedes-AMG G63 Specs

Powering the range-topping Mercedes-AMG G63 is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo (‘Biturbo’ in Mercedes’ books) V8 petrol mill. It generates 577bhp @ 6,000rpm and 850Nm @ 2,500-3,500rpm while mated to a 9-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT automatic. India-prices start at Rs 2.19 crore ex-showroom.
