2017 Volvo S90 premium luxury sedan breaks cover – Videos

One of the most awaited Volvo cars, the S90 finally debuted today in Sweden. Featuring a design inspired by the Concept Coupe which Volvo showcased back in 2013, new S90 is a premium luxury sedan which will take on the likes of Mercedes S Class, Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and the Jaguar XJ.

Today, was just an official showcase of the Volvo S90. The company did not reveal much details. What we can gather from the images shared, is that the sedan offers comfortable seating for five passengers, interiors are similar to that of XC90 with minor modifications. The dashboard for instance is a bit different, but houses the same touchscreen system which is also seen on board the XC90.

Steering wheel and the instrument panel are also same as the one on XC90, and so are the seats, upholstery, door knobs, and other fit and finish. Like the XC90, Bowers & Wilkins audio system is also seen on board the S90.

Based on the same SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform, on which the new XC90 is built, 2017 S90 dimensions are still a secret. Speaking about powertrain, 2017 Volvo S90 gets five engine options, all same as the one’s seen on XC90. These are in the form of 2.0 liter four cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engine options.

Entry level S90 D4 FWD is rated at 190 hp and 400 Nm torque, top-end diesel, D5 AWD is rated at 225 hp and 470 Nm torque. Entry level petrol S90 T5 AWD generates 264 hp and 350 Nm, T6 AWD generates 320 hp and 400 Nm torque, while top of the line T8 AWD gets an electric motor as well, together generating 407 hp and 640 Nm torque.

Speaking about the new feature that will be seen on the S90, it is City Safety feature. This feature detects large animals (horse, cows, moose, etc) on the road during the day or night. If the system detects an animal in the path of the car, it will first notify the driver, and will apply brakes to avoid collision.

Apart from this, S90 also gets the Pilot Assist tech, which was seen on the XC90. Pilot Assist will keep the car aligned as per the lane markings on the highway for speeds of upto 130 kmph.

Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group, said – “Our idea was to bring something entirely new to this rather conservative segment and deliver a visual expression that exudes leadership and confidence on the exterior. On the inside we have taken the S90 to the next level, delivering a high-end luxury experience that promises comfort and control.”

Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research & Development at Volvo Car Group, said, “The S90 has taken a big stride forwards in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride. We have completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort.”
