Even as Delhi has been ranked as the world’s worst polluted city by World Health Organisation, authorities have failed to take up this issue and address the problem head on. National Green Tribunal suggested that banning cars is the solution.
Thus, Supreme Court announced today that for the three months (Jan to Mar 2016), there will be no new registration of diesel cars with engine capacity over 2,000cc. This rule is not only applicable in Delhi, but in the entire NCR (National Capital Region). This includes Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and others.
This order will be with effect from 6th January 2016 and expected to play a major role in cleaning up the air around Delhi which is causing a disastrous effect on people’s respiratory system, claims NGT. The order also sees Supreme Court increasing pollution cess on trucks entering the city.
Mahindra is the worst affected by this ban in the mass segment, while in the premium segment it is Mercedes Benz.
The new ruling comes into effect from January 6, 2016 which also seeks to restrict renewal of registration of diesel vehicles that are over 10 years old. NGT has also appealed to both the central and state government not to purchase any new diesel cars in Delhi.
This ban, will have a catastrophic effect on automakers that have invested hundreds of crores in the diesel engine technology. Apart from this, there is a stock of INR 1,000 crore reportedly, which is lying with dealers or in company stockyard, which is no longer usable, thanks to the new ruling.
The manufacturers contend that these stocks will become obsolete next year while they will have to contend with piling stocks and increased losses. Some manufacturers even argue that banning registration of new diesel passenger vehicles in Delhi will hardly make any difference to the air that people breathe.
