Maruti Ciaz SHVS Hybrid (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) variant has been launched in India at a starting price of INR 8.23 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). Being the first hybrid sedan in its segment, Ciaz aims to disrupt the market with its effective yet affordable hybrid technology.
Being a mere variant extension, Ciaz SHVS Hybrid does not feature any exterior design changes. Not even a restyled grille or aerodynamically superior alloy wheels. The only visual difference between a regular Ciaz and the mild hybrid version comes in the form of a “SHVS Hybrid” badge on the boot lid.
Maruti Ciaz measures 4,490 mm in length, 1,730 mm in width, 1,485 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,650 mm. Ground clearance and boot capacity stand at 170 mm and 510 litres respectively.
The interior too has been retained without any changes. The dual-tone black and beige color theme with faux wooden inserts and silver accents render a premium appeal.
Ciaz SHVS Hybrid adds Torque Assist Function, Idle Stop Start, Brake Energy Regeneration and Gear Shift Indicator to the existing equipment level. Feature highlights include SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, navigation and reverse parking camera, start stop button, rear AC vents, automatic climate control, ABS, dual airbags, alloy wheels, fog lights, electrically adjustable ORVM, multifunction steering wheel, and so on.
The mild hybrid variant continues to employ the 1.3-litre DDiS 200 diesel engine which produces 90 PS and 200 Nm of torque. The motor is paired to an Integrated Starter Generator which is capable of providing torque assistance to the engine for better acceleration and generating electricity from lost kinetic energy during braking. This electricity is stored in a high capacity battery. The ISG also offers automatic start stop functionality which further improves efficiency in peak traffic. Transmission continues to be a manual 5-speed unit.
Ciaz’s petrol variant doesn’t get the SHVS system. The 1.4-litre petrol engine continues to generate 92 PS and 130 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and is also available with a 4-speed automatic unit.
The mild hybrid system has increased the diesel variants’ mileage from 26.21 kmpl to 28.09 kmpl. The petrol variant continues to deliver an ARAI certified mileage of 20.73 kmpl.
Ciaz SHVS replaces the existing regular diesel version but retains the variant line up. The additional cost of the mild hybrid is absorbed by the government’s FAME incentive to a considerable extent (INR 13,000 which is directly passed on to the customers upfront). The import of hybrid components benefits from excise duty concession from 24% to 12.5%. The prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi.
