After diesel cars, NGT now targets fuel pumps

Cherub Singla, an engineer has filed a petition at the court seeking inspection of fuel quality particularly in those cities facing immense air pollution. NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar has issued orders to carry out immediate inspection at random petrol pumps across the Delhi NCR region. Notices have been issued to Ministry of Environment and Forests, Ministry of Petroleum, Delhi government, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation besides others to conduct joint inspection and submit reports. Checking fuel for adulteration is equally important. Singla in his petition, which has been filed through his advocate Avneesh Arpurham, contends that it is petrol and diesel adulteration that has contributed and compounded the problem of air pollution in the region. Ministers have hence been directed to collect samples, analyze these samples and submit a report to the tribunal at the earliest. NGT has also directed authorities to check both four and two wheelers in Delhi NCR region for emission levels.

It is contended that petrol and diesel adulteration which is mixed with kerosene which is substantially cheaper due to government subsidies, adds to emission levels. Total hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and particle matter increased significantly adding to pollution. Singla alleges weak regulatory system in checking adulteration of fuel, thus allowing the racket to flourish. The petition has indicated complete closure of petrol pumps and agencies found guilty of adulterated fuels while stiff penalties should be imposed on them. via PTI
