In April 2017, Tata Motors passenger vehicle sales grew by 27% to 10,855 units following strong demand for Tata Tiago, Tigor and Hexa. This allowed Honda Cars India held the no 4 position for April 2017 after reporting growth of 38.09% with 14,480 units sold.
Now, May 2017 sales saw Tata Motors post sales of 12,499 units, an increase of 32.18% while sales of Honda Cars slipped to 11,278 units.
There were however, no comments to this effect from Honda Cars India, who claim that both their new Honda City and Honda WR-V have been noting increased demand with 33,000 and 18,000 bookings respectively. Both these models are produced from the company’s plant in Tapukara while the Honda City rolls off assembly lines from the company plant in Greater Noida.
The introduction of GST from 1st July 2017 should bring further impetus to the passenger vehicle segment which is estimated to grow between 9-10% in the months ahead. SUVs and luxury vehicles will see a reduced price while small cars will also receive some price cuts which would result in increased sales. Sales of passenger vehicles across Tier II and Tier III regions have also noted a marked increase following predictions of good monsoon which will put greater disposable income in the hands of buyers.
The list of best sellers in the PV segment however continued to have Maruti Suzuki India at the helm followed by Hyundai Motors and M&M, all noting substantial increase in domestic sales. Toyota Kirloskar Motors was at a No.6 position with sales of 10,914 units while Renault India at No 7 reported sales of 8,639 units, a growth of 3.55%. Ford India, Nissan and VW claimed the bottom three slots even as VW continues to excel where exports are concerned even after the emission issues it had to face.
