Top 20 cars sold in August 2016 – Top 4 Maruti cars post sales decline

The list of top 20 cars sold in India during the past month saw Maruti Suzuki Alto in the lead followed in quick succession by DZire, WagonR and Swift claiming top four positions. Surprisingly, all the top four cars from MSIL registered a decline in sales when compared to their respective sales figures of August 2015.

On the other hand, their new cars like Vitara Brezza, Baleno, and Ciaz continued to post impressive sales. This once again shows that the car maker has shifted their focus from small entry level cars to much larger, and premium segment. Other Maruti cars in the top 20 list are Celero, Omni, Eeco and Ertiga Maruti Suzuki total sales in August 2016 stood at 1,19,906 units.

Though sales were less than 50% that of Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai was in second spot with its Grand i10 and Elite i20 in 5th and 6th position while the Hyundai Creta and Xcent also featured on the list at 10th and 20th position. 8,450 units of the Hyundai Creta were sold in the past month, an increase of 14% as against 7,437 units sold in August 2015. Hyundai Xcent sales increased 35% from 3,202 units sold in August 2015 to 4,316 units sold in the past month. Total Hyundai sales in August 2016 stood at 43,201 units.

Mahindra is in third spot on the list of top 20 cars sold in August 2016 with a total of 18,246 units sold during the month. Renault India witnessed growth of 749% from August 2015 due to increased popularity of the Kwid hatchback while Honda witnessed decline of 10.9% as compared to sales in August 2015.

Toyota Kirloskar Motors’ Innova Crysta sales in August 2016 stood at 8,229 units, up 59% as compared to sales of 5,175 units in August 2015. Ford Ecosport was also much in demand with sales increasing 67% from 3,137 units in August 2015 to 5,248 units in August 2016. The Tata Tiago featured at No. 19 with sales of 4,527 units during the month.
