There is a lot in common between Audi A3 and A4 saloons. Looks, features, options and even engine choices are similar in both siblings, but obviously A3 has slightly toned down equipment. Audi has managed to make A3 very desirable even though it is an entry level sedan. Those who could afford only entry level A4 can now joyfully go for mid variant of A3 and those who could buy mid line A4 can now get fully loaded A3, without compromising much on fun of driving an A4.
Audi A3 is available in two engine options, same as available in A4, but in slightly different state of tunes. Audi A3 petrol gets 1.8 litre TFSI engine that produces 180 PS maximum power @ 5,100 – 6,200 rpm while same motor in A4 produces 170 PS @ 3,800 – 6,200 rpm. If you’re power hungry, you can opt for Audi S4 which houses 3.0 litre TFSI petrol engine that pushes out 333 PS @ 5500 – 6500 rpm and 440 Nm @ 2900 – 5300 rpm, but its price is equivalent to buying two Premium variant A3 sedans.
Diesel engines, which Audi is more famous for, are offered in all variants unlike petrol motors restricted to one or two variants in A3 and A4 saloons. 2.0 litre TDI in Audi A3 produces 143 PS @ 3500 – 4000 rpm and 320 Nm @ 1750 – 2500 rpm. Whereas in A4, same 2.0 litre TDI is offered in two tunes, 150 PS @ 4200 rpm and 177 PS @ 4200 rpm, generating 320 Nm @ 1750 – 2500 rpm and 380 Nm @ 1750 – 2500 rpm respectively. There is also a 3.0 litre TDI V6 variant in A4 that blasts 245 PS max. power @ 4000 – 4500 rpm and 500 Nm @ 1400 – 3250 rpm.
Price of Audi A3 2.0 35 TDI starts at Rs. 22.95 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi), while A3 40 TFSI is priced at Rs. 28.95 lakhs. Audi A4 2.0 TDI base variant starts at Rs. 25.99 lakhs and 1.8 TFSI version begins at Rs. 29.86 lakhs. Audi S4 costs Rs. 52.64 lakhs.
