The accident occurred on July 4, 2016 when Siddharth Maharia, son of local independent MLA Nandkishore Maharia in Jaipur was reportedly at the wheel of a BMW 5 Series at 2 am. Sources say that he was under the influence of alcohol.
Siddharth rammed his BMW into an auto rickshaw and then into a Police PCR van while travelling at a speed of 100 kmph. The impact was so great, that the auto rickshaw was thrown ahead for around 200 feet leaving three of its four occupants dead while three policeman in the parked PCR van were injured.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Siddharth had a blood alcohol level of 152mg per 100 ml of blood which is five times more than the permissible limit of 30 mg per 100 ml of blood. Besides Siddharth, his cousin Jayant was also in the vehicle and has been detailed for questioning.
Siddharth has denied the fact that he was drunk at the time of the accident and that he even drinks. He has also stated that the vehicle was driven by his driver, Ramesh, and that they were travelling at a reasonable speed of 50-60 kmph. However, CCTV footage of the accident prove otherwise.
Jaipur Commissioner of Police Sanjay Agarwal has confirmed that there were only two persons in the car at the time of the accident and hence Siddharth has been arrested while Jayant has been detailed for questioning. An FIR has been registered on Saturday evening under ICP 304 punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The police confirm that the FIR took time as they wanted to avoid any legal loopholes.
