42 year old driver burnt alive as new Chevrolet Sail catches fire in Gurgaon
The two month old diesel engined Chevrolet Sail sedan caught fire on the Surajkund-Pali Road in Faridabad. The victim, who was also the driver of the car, was burnt alive as he was unable to get out of the car in time.
Identified as Hardev from Hirapur village in Faridabad, the victim was trapped in the burning car and died even before fire brigade could be called to tend to the fire.
Initial investigations reveal that short circuit could be the cause of the fire while central locking system got jammed in the process preventing the driver from escaping. Hardev lived in Sector 14 Faridabad and was on his way to Gurgaon from Faridabad. It was while passing through Pali Road that the incident took place at 8.30 pm in Tuesday night.
The two month old Chevrolet Sail sedan was powered by a diesel engine and no CNG kit was seen in the car and hence after market fitment or use of alternate fuel could not have been the reason for the fire. Investigations as to the exact cause of fire and reasons for the death of driver are underway.
General Motors launched updated Chevrolet Sail sedan and hatchback in India in December 2014. The Sail hatchback is available at a starting price of INR 4.41 lakhs while the Sail sedan is priced from INR 5.19 lakhs. Both models are powered by petrol and diesel engines.
